Wanted some input on 4 or 5 point seatbelts? I sit awful close to steering wheel and want something to keep me off it in case of an accident. The lap belt I don't think is gonna cut it for me. Any input would be helpful. :D

Either a 3, 4 or 5 point will require to you make an anchor point behind the seat backs to be effective. RCI makes DOT legal 2" wide 4 point and 3 point belts. The 3 point is a Y just behind the neck on the sholder straps and has a single anchor point for the strap. What type you get depends on your seat type. If you have an adjustable head rest you can use either the 3 or 4 point system. If, like me, you have seats with two holes for the sholder straps then you need to get a 4 point harness. Any of these will do what you want.

Corbeau also makes DOT legal harnesses.

I had 5 pointers in Dutch.

First to go was the crotch strap...just never felt like using it.

Next to go were the shoulder straps - I had them anchored to the floor behind the seats, which is supposedly a no-no. They were also a pain to get in and out of. Once in them, you could not move forward at all - to lean out the door or get into the glovebox.

That left us with 3" lapbelts, and buckles so big you had to get them positioned just right or they cut into your stomach.

SSDutch now has Wrangler seat belts with shoulder straps and retractors - have yet to drive it though. I expect we'll have to do something about the retractors off-road to prevent them from locking up while climbing up or down and wanting to move.

Mike, I've been told that the key to preventing them from locking up is to NOT mount them on the sloping front of the wheelhouse... a common mounting point for retractor installations on CJ5s. Don't ask
I plan on moving mine soon, before the Tioga trip.
In fact, I scavenged some scrap steel today out in the shop for just that project!

A couple years ago I got some pics from a guy known on other boards as CSP. He gave me pics of his retractor install on his '75. He said that they hardly ever lock up, and mounting them this way allows for more belt for bigger guys. Let me see if I can attach the pics... OK!

This should work pretty well in a 5. not sure if you could do this on the center hoop of the 6...

Thats a really nice idea using wrangler seat belts. I suppose the pendulum in the retracter is what effects the lockup so mount position would be critical for proper operation in a crash.

I too have been thinking of 4 pt belts. I really like the corbea belts with the modern OEM looking latch. Seems like it would be a lot easier to use than the old clunky latch designs. My main reason for shoulder belts is more for a street accident than offroad. I probably wouldn't use the shoulder straps much offroad unless I was going try something challenging.

Me too I sit way to close to the steering wheel and have had a few close calls on the street. I decided to go with the RCI street belts which are the 4-point with the more modern latch. These are also DOT approved ( I dont need anything else for the cops to look at me for  ) I ordered from Summit Racing which has a location near Akron so they should arrive early next week and I will get them put in before the weekend R)
