What a great idea. I am going to try that. We have an old crock pot in storage that is a spare and it is larger than the primary one the wife uses only once in a while. :)
Maybe even one of those big "Turkey Fryers" one of my co-workers bought and used only once, cause it turned the bird to mush. :p

Looks like a good idea. Use something like Castrol Super Clean and it should be very effective.

I’m sure there will be an aroma, but it won’t smell like pot roast.

As soon as the snow melts I will ask my professional yard sale goers to keep a watch out for a crock pot.

Is that a type of degreaser? Also, the ad states:
    What's TSP?

TSP should be available at your local paint store. It's often used for washing down siding before painting. High in phosphate, so not very environmentally acceptable, as detergents go.

Castrol Super Clean is an aqueous degreaser - you should be able to get it, or a competing product, at large parts stores. I haven't used it - just read about it here.

Lots of degreasing is done with water and detergents now - you can have your cylinder block pressure washed and baked at some shops as an alternative to hot tanking.

I'd say no. The dissolved and suspended solids are toxic waste; not as bad as pesticides and such but they'd be bad for wetlands etc.

I'd let the spent cleaner and sludge evaporate, then either give it to my local household waste disposal site (best) or throw it out with the trash (not as good).

Not certain, but I think it's lye (sodium hydroxide). Lye + grease = soap.

Bad for some metals - eats away your cam bearings (and anything aluminum).
