I own a 64 Tuxedo Park CJ-6A with no real money to fix.I'm looking for a good replacement frame.Does anyone have any ideas?I'd like to be able to just pick up a frame at my local junk yard.Would a Jeepster frame work (101 wheel base)? It would be great if I could use a run of the mill truck frame.

A Jeepster frame would be easiest, other than an actual CJ-6 frame. The rear cross member and rear springs mounting is different from the CJ-6. The front springs, wheelbase, and the rest of the drivetrain mounting is the same. You may find some other minor differences, though I expect they'd be easy to adapt.

    Where are you located?

Outside of another 6 frame or the Jeepster idea...any "run of the mill truck frame" is going to be an exercise in complete modification/fabrication, and likely to eat up as much $$ in incidentals as finding a 6 frame to begin with.

I know Patricks Dad has a 6 frame in NM, and a nice CJ6 frame/drivetrain was recently sold in CO....might just be a waiting game to get a correct frame.

If you have more time than money, just take a cj-5 frame and add 20" to it.

I know where there is a good CJ-6 frame at a salvage yard in New Braunfels, Texas. Reason I know the frame is good is because I bought the tub and the Dauntless V-6 off of it for my CJ-6 two weeks ago. The tub I got had no major damage, solid floors unlike the tub on my CJ-6. Going to save me a lot of welding repair. If I didn't already have solid frame, would have thought about buying that too. The frame it was on looked to be in really good shape, couldn't see any major rust areas. The axles and springs are still on it also. The guy at the salvage yard is very reasonable on his prices.

Thanks guys but I'm looking for something closer.I live in Indiana.Would a cut and welded CJ-5 frame (20'') be a good idea (safe)? If so I'm thinkin this would be my best bet.CJ-5 frames are easy to find and there is always a welder to be found ($).I'm open to all ideas.

I would think so if it were professionally welded. You'd need to find or make the right size channel, and I'd think a diamond-shaped weld would be best. The butt weld across the top and bottom of the rail is the weakest point. I'd strap the frame top and bottom - the CJ-6 has a strap on the bottom anyway IIRC. Make sure your welder understands you want a neat and professional appearance, and that it needs to be square when he's done.

I'm thinking the CJ-6 frame and repairs will still be cheaper and fit better.
    YMMV. ;)

IN to MI for $100 is too expensive and far? Contact the guy...I'm betting he's not getting a ton of offers...

The one issue I'd have with lengthening a CJ5 frame is the flex issue - are the 4 welds going to hold up to the ends flexing?

    Also - if it's originality you're going for.... ;)

I'm going for as close to orignal as possible.I can not stress enough the money issue. The builder knows frames I know I need something to pull the jeep together.I think were gonna use square tube inside the C chanel and underlap 20'' as well on both ends. We're talkin 60'' of tube!!!!So what do you think.I'm open minded and would like to hear your feed back.

Personally, I'd feel uncomfortable with anything but an original frame, or a full-on custom replacement frame, boxed end to end. Otherwise you have a patchwork of c-channel and tubing, some of it will flex as designed and some won't.

Call the guy in MI and offer him $50, and jump on the road.
