I am wondering about the 2 tailgate stencils Kaiser Willies offers. Which one would have been on my 1970 Jeep CJ5? One just says 4 wheel drive. The other says Jeep 4 wheel drive. Which one should I go with?

Just 4 wheel drive I think. The one with the JeeP in it was used on trucks and wagons I think. Maybe someone else can confirm or deny this for sure.

Check Walck's website. I think they describe the correct applications.

In answer to Brad's original question, stencil "J" above should be the correct one. This is the one with the "4" to he left of "wheel drive". It seems many of the ones advertised today have the 4 above "wheel drive".
Thanks CJ Joe for posting the chart! Its interesting the drawing below the chart for CJ2a's is not included on the chart. Does anyone know when this CJ2a stencil was superceded by the later version show as "J" on the chart?

Would a 1970 CJ5 would have had anything on the tailgate originally from the factory? Someone can correct me if I am wrong but I thought they were blank - mine has been repainted so its not much help. I like the C or J as an option as it probably should have had something on the tailgate originally - would look good!

By "blank" I think they mean there was no name stamped into the center block. As far as a stencil in '70, I'm not sure but I think there was none but, instead the small AMC emblem at the lower left of the gate. Again, a more informed member can probably confirm or deny. It may have even been a mid year thing for 70. My 71 should have the emblem to be correct but, it's not a concern on this JEEP as it's not close to stock anyhow.

True - the sale from KW to AMC was in 1970 - that may have changed things. My Jan 1970 CJ5 was still KW and has no stamping on the tailgate. Be interested to know if it had the 4 wheel drive stencil.

I bought a stencil and had a problem painting it on the tailgate. When spray painting, the stencil lifted off the metal and the letters where not crisp on the edges. I wa using base color then clear coat. If you do anything, I would recommend purchase a decal and stick it on. There are some on ebay.

Some spray adhesive works well, as does adhesive transfer paper used in the graphics field.

I didn't like the results of the stencil and spraying over it. I took the tail gate and stencil to a guy who lettered dirt track cars. He painted it by hand. Like 20 years ago.

As for Donny's question, we see the drawing is dated 1947 and the chart includes the FC which came out in 1956.

My '68 Kaiser/Jeep has a tailgate without stamping and a stencil on the right side. I recently discovered the stencil while refinished the tailgate.

FWIW, here's an old photo showing the tailgate of my '67 CJ5. This was taken by the original owner "back in the day". Not a great image, but the stencil is visible:

In general, it seems light colored CJ5's had contrasting black stencil writing, and dark CJ5's had white painted writing. I have seen red Jeeps with either black or white. My own white '64 Tuxedo Park had gold painted tailgate lettering, as well as the raised Jeep name on the cowl side in gold.
Any other observations of original colors for the tailgate writing?

My dad's all original 69 has the stencil pictured in the 2 photos above. It's an aqua blue color, and the stencil is white.
My avatar pic is my tailgate, I bought the decal off ebay, I wasn't concerned with originality I just bought the one I liked best.

LOL my Jeep isn't a restoration, it's a fun vehicle for me and my kids to enjoy the Colorado mountains. I try to keep it stockish looking but it has plenty of mods too.
Now back to your regularly scheduled thread...

I just bought one off eBay too. It's a vinyl decal. I'll see how much I like it. If not then I'll try the stencil from Walck's.

Now you guys got me thinking I should add the 4 wheel drive to my tailgate - it does look good. On day I will get it back to the original STG color with black top and then I might have to add the stencil or decal.

What kind of paint are you guys using? I'm thinking about using one of the Hobby Lobby foam stencils stipplers I've seen.
