my 67 sputters and backfires so I suspected a timing issue. When I tried to set the timing to 5 degrees it would stall out. It only has a decent idle when I turn the distributor all the way which puts the timing mark above the timing tab. I'm wondering if the distributor and / or cap aren't for an odd fire?

Pictures of your setup would help with the diagnoses. Wires going to the correct plugs? Distributor off a tooth on the drive gear? Is it a new distributor? HEI? Delco? Prestolite?

How can we help? I had to go search through all of your back posts just to find out that you do in fact have a 225V6 and not a 231 E.F. Also you do in fact have a standard point distributor and you do in fact have a Delco CW rotation type dist. Other than that I have no idea as to whether this engine has ever been running in your presence or if you have put in a different one or if you have done any mechanical work on the engine such as changing the timing chain and gears. If you don't know enough about mechanics to ask the proper questions, don't be shy. Pictures and more pictures will help us determine a fix and get you going.

Sorry for the lack of info. I just bought it and was told everything is original. I've been driving it but of course it is low on power and misses and backfires. I haven't done anything to it other than cleaning the carb and changing oil. I've attached a pic

Missing the hose to the distributor vacuum advance. (Top left of pic.)

Needs to be connected to manifold. If the manifold end is open too, it will also be screwing up your fuel mixture.

I did notice that and plugged the manifold side until I get the vacuum line on but that still wouldn't explain why it will only idle with high initial timing right? It's supposed to be disconnected for that setting anyway I thought.

Judging by the rust on the nipple of the vacuum module it hasn't had a hose on it in quite a while. When you turn the distributor all of the way and get the decent idle does it also run better and have more power?

    My specs (with HEI).
    Plugged vacuum line.
    Idles at 650 RPM.
    Timing at 9*.
    Under acceleration it's at 17*.

    Connected vacuum line.
    Idles at 650 RPM.
    Timing at 9*.
Under acceleration it's at 32* max.

800 RPM in the video from a cold start. See if this link works?

It looks like the mechanical advance maybe not working. Spread the weights outward and see if they spring back in. Should move very freely. Check the vacuum advance can to see if it will move the points breaker plate. With the uni-set points it's near impossible to set points with a feeler gauge so needs to be set with dwell meter. I set at 32* dwell. Vacuum advance hose needs to be plugged into the carb base for the 225V6.
