okay, the topic of the double lip seal for the dana 18 has been discussed many times. not to beat a dead horse, but i am facing an obstacle.... i found the below thread regarding this topic:

    http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2924&highlight=15635

in the thread lynn mentions that he was told chicago rawhide (cw) seal 15635 cross referneces to national/federal mogul seal 473229. BUT, he mentions that seal 15635 does not appear to be double lipped.

Here's my dilemna. every place i call looking for national seal 473229 tells me that its the same as cw seal 15635, and that they only carry 15635. so i went to a local bearing supply house to look at seal 15635. it does not appear to be doubled lipped to me either. national seal 473229 was not carried, so i could not do a side by side comparson of the two. has anyone ever seen these two seals side by side? are they in fact different (despite the fact that all suppliers tell me they are the same seal)? where can i get national seal 473229? like i said, no one seems to have it, they only carry the cw seal. i'm set on using the double lip seal on my dana 18 rebuild and want to be sure i use the right one!

I am at work, and have the CR Seal Handbook in front of me right now. The 15635 is a dual lipped seal. It is a CRW-A1 type seal. At first glance you probably will not see two separate seals but they are there.
It looks like a common, regular seal in that the inner seal has the metal spring. The second seal is really a tiny lip out board of the inner spring loaded one. (as it is installed with the spring loaded one trying to keep the lubricant inside)
Not intending to create controversy here, but I dont think it will do alot. It is designed for dry, dusty conditions such as a paper mill, where dry powdery dust is thick and falling on the bearings of the rollers.
Here is the description of this type of seal from CRs' handbook " Dual lip design without inner cases. Provides LIGHT dirt exclusion enhancing the service life of the lubricant, retaining spring loaded main lip."
In other words, its design is to keep contaminants out of the lube, which I dont think is a big concern with a model 18 T-case.
After a number of miles, the lube seems to drip out of these T-cases almost as fast as you can pour it in. Ergo lube is seeping out, NOT contaminants migrating in.
Anyway, the parts place is right. The above numbers are for the same seal.

Great info. thanks for the reply. at 6 dollars a seal i'm gonna grab them. the double lip seal has to be better than the stock single lip seal, right?

The way that's written it's saying the outer lip is designed to protect the inner lip (the sealing surface). I.e. it's really a dust shield. ;)

well thats good news. the outer lip will keep any foreign material from being pinned between the inner lip and the the yoke. this will help prevent groves from being worn onto the yoke surface, and will help the inner seal to do its job.

lets stir it up a little, sorry I am late
    Victor #823896
    National # 450185
these are the old seal #s for use with the felt and paper gasket set-up
they have a single wide lip, but the lip is tapered on both sides; make sense?
    what I use, no leaks
some t/case gasket/seal kits come with them
maybe these numbers are superceded by above?
