We are new here and just purchased a 70 CJ5 V6 that has been sitting outside for two years. After draining the gas tank, replacing the fuel filter and purging the system of "Gasovarnish" we finally got her to run. After sitting for five minutes or so she wont start unless we pour some gas down the carb. We unhooked the fuel line at the carb thinking there was another filter in the carb but notheing was inside but a spring. Is this correct or is there suppose to be another filter/strainer inside the carb? If so does anyone have a part number? Thanks

Welcome, stop by the introduction section and give us some pics and tell us something about yourself.

Carb sounds right to me. Unless it had one of those cruddy cintered brass "filters" in it, in that case we recommend throwing those out.

Yup, throw away the cintered brass unit, (sound like it's already gone). I personally like the see thru inline filters. My tank was pretty rusty when I bought the Jeep, 8 years ago, but it is finally clearing out. Clogged many filters. I would also recommend a filter before the pump, if your getting crap out of the tank.
sounds like a carb rebuild is in order. These 2g's are very simple, and easy to rebuild...

Would the brass carb filter and spring keep the gas in the carb after shutting the engine down?

Look to see if your accelerator pump is working, chances are it has dried out from sitting.

It should start after a few minutes even without an accelerater pump shot.....

Does it stay running after it is started? If so I would check that pump, alot can happen to seals gaskets etc. when they have been sitting awhile and its an easy check.

does gas come out of the jet when you pump the pedal???? varnish is a pain to remove, especialy the new "reformulated" stuff.

Yea it runs great after starting, it just wont restart after sitting five minutes or so without dumping some gas down the carb. I checked the fuel pump and it seems to pump fine. ????????

The symptoms you describe suggest the bowl is dry. This usually doesn't happen until the car has been sitting without starting for weeks.

Once the float bowl is full, the inlet valve prevents more gas from entering... and should prevent the gas that's there from draining. Unless there's something wrong with the carburetor, the gas in the float bowl should just sit there, like it were in a cup, until it's time to start the engine again.

Seems unlikely that gas were being sucked back out of the carburetor through the sintered filter and fuel pump. More likely that it's draining away somehow inside the carburetor. I'd run the car, stop it and take the top off the carburetor. Disconnect the fuel inlet. Watch to see if the float bowl drains.
