I've had a backfire thru the carb problem since I got this little 4 cyl critter, today I replaced the rotor and it got better and played with the timing by ear and it sounds better at the exhaust pipe but it still backfires. I replaced the points and set them at .020.
I seem to hear a hissing from the carb, almost like a vacumn leak.

    Am I missing anything?

Vacuum leaks can cause backfire (lean condition). Spray WD40 around the carb base gasket while it's running and see if the idle speed changes.
