I think it was stock on some cars. i have the PCV valve hooked into the carb like it is suppoed to be, but currently i have a plug in air filter on the valve cover to allow air flow. my question, can i eliminate the air filter and run a nipple from the valve cover up to the air cleaner assembly, because there is already a nipple on there. Or will the suction from the air going into the air cleaner snorkel create a vaccum that will be detrimental?

Yeah dan lots of cars have that setup stock. Typically there'll be a little filter inside the aircleaner tho to keep the heavy stuff out. Most flaps have these in the "help" section I think.

Just make sure it isn't in the same valve cover that the pcv valve is in.

Thanks guys!! The PCV is in my intake , just need a fresh air source, so that will be good for me. I put the little filter on, but now it just kind of flops around, defiantely need a new grommet, and it is too open to get water intrusion for my liking.

I know on my old Chevy 350 it had the tube to the air cleaner, and the little air filter in there. I think that was because the air was actually being drawn from the OUTSIDE of the air cleaner element, but from inside the housing (still dirty air).
Now, on my current K&N, there is a nipple on the bottom plate that is INSIDE the air cleaner. I have thought of doing away with my breather and running a hose to the nipple. Wouldn't need one of those filters there because the air is already cleaned.

I think the cleaner assembly i have has the inlet inside the air filter so no other filter :)

Autozone or FLAPS will sell a separate air cleaner that plugs into your valve cover grommet (comes in several colors - bling!). All the open element air cleaners I've seen have a fitting or punch-out for the PCV air that draws air from inside the air cleaner, near the air horn. The downside I could imagine is if your engine spits up a lot of oil (blowby)... some engines, like the 258, will fill the stock air cleaner with oil if there's a lot of blowby. I'd guess this is atomized oil that condenses on the inside of the air cleaner when the engine is shut off, or when there's no manifold vacuum. There also may be a fire/explosion hazard if you vent the crankcase to the air horn.

When I vented mine, I ran the PCV inlet to a brass fitting I soldered to the bottom plate of the air cleaner. I also added a fine mesh copper screen over the vent to act as a flame arrestor (hopefully - it hasn't been tested). Probably overkill.
