The backing plates are different but the drums shoes and adjusters are the same.

I have not heard of anyone using the M20 backing plates on the D44, but there may be a way to do it. Undoubtedly you'd need to cut and/or redrill the M20 plates for the D44, but you'll have to measure whether the distance from the housing flange to the drum is compatible. Making a spacer from the flange to the plate would be simple enough, but if the D44 flange sticks out further than the M20, the M20 plates will be too far out. 60s F100 plates are said to work with some modification, so maybe you could use those with the rest of the parts.

You could part out the rest of the M20, and scrap what you don't sell. What ratio is it? Not much demand...

What brakes are on the flanged D44?
What effect would there be to run them with the D30 front set?

I would think you could use the 11 inch drums from the front model 30 on your rear 44 - if that is what you are asking (but would not give you a parking brake). The brakes on the model 20 rear I believe are only 10 inches anyways and as Timgr explains would need to be modified to work (I do not think it would be worth the effort). If you are still using the transfer case parking brake you could convert the model 30 to disk brakes then use the removed 11 inch drums to update your rear 44.

I can relate to that as I have one of those unwanted 20s that came with the 30. I think your best bet is just to try and sell off the unwanted axle or scrap it - it does not give you anything to work with.

I apologize for my misinformation. I have what I believe to be a 1980 narrow track 20 an 86 wide track 20 and an 86 wide track 44 - all with 10" drums. A quick look and quadratec lists 11 x 2 drums up to 1978 and then 10 x 1.75 drums after that. Maybe it is worth looking at modifying the backing plates.
