Still think turbo or SC with the strength of the bottom end and the fact that diesels use turbos and like to rev about like an F-head.

The solex "does" have the extension from the base of the carb to the intake.that would be a dandy place to put a couple nozzles.....Hmm or even the vac port on the intake just below the carb....

It's a big, heavy (!) block with steel rods and a steel crank, and lots of bearing surface. Seems to me the only way to get any performance would be a turbocharger with a lot of boost at low revs. Keep the revs down - loooong stroke doesn't like to be run at high RPM.

**** Datson has a few pages in his "The Jeep Safari Book" (out of print) that suggests a "too small" turbo and a waste gate so boost comes on early. **** is still around ... Beth says she saw him at a recent Studebaker meet.

My own feeling is that Mike (MOP) is pretty close to the mark. Instaling a Pinto 2300 or Chevy 153 (the real Iron Duke) is probably cheaper and more reliable... even a V6 is likely to be cheaper if you don't discount your time to $0.

<edit> Heh. The familiar for Richard is still banned!

Who's this D.Datson? Never heard of him or his book. Very interesting! I'd think that head gasket strength might be a concern once you start talking any forced induction methods. Maybe not, you'll never know until you try.
There is little to none out there for aftermarket hop up parts, so any attempt would be a home brewed project, but that's where the real fun starts! ;)

What happened to the guy who was experimenting with a leaf blower or vaccum cleaner in reverse while driving down the road (no, I'm not making that up...someone here was doing that)?

    D. Datson is an old-time Studebaker hop up guru who also had an interest in the Kaiser and AMC marques. He had a newsletter for a long time, and was bundling his newsletter by topic into books. His latest interest has been in economical turbochargers and superchargers for smaller engines, under the name "Gator Superchargers" (Sarasota FL). Pretty interesting - used junkyard turbochargers as superchargers, getting extra boost at low RPM with a CO2 bottle, and other interesting stuff. He offered the last of the books on his web site, which is gone now. Beth might have some more to say about this.

I have his "The Jeep Safari Book" and "The AMC Jeep 6/V8 Engine Book" which I bought from the website on a tip from Beth. I would have bought the Studebaker, turbo, and AMC books too, but the website was gone by the time I got around to it. I think I've most of the info want, since there seems to be some overlap between the books. Having the Studebaker books would be interesting, but I'll probably never own a Studebaker.

I think Clifford has enough stuff and knowhow on their site that you'd be able to get an honest hundred horsepower maybe more and still have pretty good bottom end. But this little engine as much as I like it aint gonna like it at hyway speeds. In that case one picture worth a thousand words... :v6: :D

We talked about NOS in the great v6 vs the Mighty 'CANE debate awile back.
If you want gobs of power, the F head is not the mule.
I will (if I keep the ole 134) install a Pertonix, header with free flow muffler and a Weber at some point.

Though I still think the 2300cc ferd would make alot more useable hp.

If I ever go pinto power I can sell my 'cane to Billy. :D

You know whith a little work there really are alot of 4 cylinders that would make a good swap. Toyota 22R, Isuzu 2.3/2.6, Chevy 2.5, Ford 2.3, Nissan 2.4 napz, all of these motors are good little engines that make alot more power and torque than the original Hurricane engine, it would just take some creativity to mount a few of these.
I would call Clifford performance and talk to them seriously though, I bet they can make a 100+/- hp with good reliabilty.

I think the most reasonable F-134 performance mods are shown here:

    http://www.film.queensu.ca/CJ3B/Tech/KamunenEngine.html

    Pertronix/Weber (or Solex)/Clifford Headers

Turbochargers don't typically boost until higher rpms (3K+). Superchargers will boost provide boost much earlier and I think some examples exist. Brian Hauchuca(sp?) had a kit and a google search will probably show some from Kaiser cars. All are likely to be very expensive and time consuming.

For my money, MOP had it right. A :v6: was the best answer for me.

Don't ask for my comments on leaf blowers.................. R)
