Hi All, So I am hell bent on tracking down the few couple of leaks I have in my 66 cj (I know probably a fools errand). Anyway; I cleaned off the oil pan and discovered a leak under the drain plug BUT the drain plug is dry. Is it possible that the pan itself is damaged? This leak started 5 minutes after I cleaned and I cant find any oil running down the edge of the pan to this point. Any thoughts would be great. Planning on replacing the gasket so could take apart and check for rot. Thank you.

    Which engine ?
It's possible for the spot welds to leak that attach the oil pan skid plate.

this is the F 134. as you can see, the skid is bent pretty good there. I did not do the resto (7 years back). Not sure if it was bent prior but there has always been a tiny leak

Of course drop the pan, this could be an old seal leaking for the plug itself.

its the lowest point on the pan very likely rusted through from the inside out. water and sludge sinks

ok well the pan has to come off. I did read that JP Weld holds up well repairing the inside of the pan - of course after full curing. Got my next project. Thanks guys.

could be rusted out from the inside out. if cars sit for a long time they get condensation build up in there and rot at the welds. really bad if no oil was stored in the pan.

well pan came off over the weekend. It was near perfect inside after full cleaning. The weld points were just slightly darker than rest of pan but certainly no rust.
I suspect the oil was just seeping all around the base of the skid plate. I replaced the gasket and oil of course. If all stays well I will report back how I did the gasket. Seems like there are tons of options out there. I stuck with the cork. Thanks for all your input!
