I have a question regarding the brake system on a 55-71 CJ-5. The question is can a hydro boost from a GM vehicle's power steering powered master cylinder be installed on the original master brake location on the lower frame. Any answers and advice would be appreciated.

I posted this question a year or more ago. I was thinking the lack of the vacuum booster would make it possible for the master mounted on the frame. What I read was that hydroboost can be difficult to get right. There are some companies that can set you up one, for a price. I guess the astro vans had one that might work. I ended up going vacuum booster and swinging pedals for power brakes. Mine works excellently now.

I have a mechanic friend that did a hydroboost on an old Bronco. I think it was a bit pricey but it worked great. I'll see if I can find out the manufacturer.

    Maybe yes, maybe no.

Hot rod outfits sell a version for under the floor brake MC setups but if you're still running the ross box steering you probably won't have room for it-however since you seem to have hydraulic pressure available I'm guessing you're running a power saggy so it should work.

On the off chance you still run a single circuit brake MC you can install a remote booster, either an old hydrovac or a VH44 clone.

I have done it on two of my Jeeps, but I also went to swing pedals, I am sure it could be done without doing the pedals but would be very pricy.
Yes, the astro van is the one you want to get but still needs an adaptor to make it work, there are a couple of guys you do this online.
They stop so well now, that anyone driving them, I have to worn them about the great brakes.

Howard"s post about using an old Hydrovac remote me be the easiest way to do it if you are going to keep the master in the floor

Got a pic? I would like to see how you did it. I have hydroboost on my Chevy 2500HD and it works awesome.

The hydroboost units are fairly common in U-Pull yards, mostly on GM vehicles; full size pickups, Astro vans, some full size van, and some '90s full size wagons. The Astro version uses a mounting plate that angles it down about 45*, where the others keep the mounting horizontal. With the fabrication necessary to mount under the floor, this might not matter.
Virtually all the above units are firewall mounted brake systems where the hydroboost has replaced the vacuum booster.
There is very limited real estate in our early CJs with the master cylinder mounted to the frame, and, by design, the brake master is mounted to the hydroboost, it would be a difficult conversion, if even possible.
If your Jeep has had the master cylinder moved to the firewall via swinging pedals, a hydroboost should be a straight foreward swap, especially if you already have a power steering pump, which it what powers the hydroboost.
