Put two new calipers on the front axle. It sat for so many years that the '76ish calipers froze up. Only the rears were working:shock:. it actually worked ok lol Now it works better.

image.jpeg image.jpeg Focker, Thanks for the thread! Great idea. I got my role bar in the 3a. A little worried about placement and height. Worried about soft top fitting. I cut 6" off where the hoop mounts to wheel well. From wheel well to top of hoop it measures 32". I mounted it forward, up to the pocket. Tacked it in the jeep, then pulled it out and welded up. Out of time, so front cage will have to wait.

image.jpeg Was trying to put in drive shafts also. One bolt in the rear hub, would not cooperate. It kept spinning, so I tried to remove it and that turned into an ordeal. A cutoff wheel was called into action and the bolt came out. I should have used new bolts, in the first place.
Got my brakes bled also, used a harbor freight bleeder. Worked good, no mess.

I recondition a lot of my nuts and bolts by soaking them in my HF Ultra Sonic Cleaner. I have a wire wheel in my drill press to further clean the threads.

Not sure if there's any galvanic action / hardening / softening but I use muratic acid from the paint thinner isle, make sure you are outside, use an old plastic coffee can, the plastic sour cream 'pint' bucket (we use the one that looks like a 'cow' brand), and toss the bolts / nuts in there. Stuff eats rust, turns grease to a floating soapy substance, and generally does a good job... a lot of hot soapy water to rinse. then coat with a little WD-40 or your fav spray lube to prevent flash rust.

Better to put bolts and nuts into container first, then add the juice, as splashing on your skin can send you to the hose quickly.

Very smart to wear glasses / eye ppe also.

To get rid of the pint or so left overs, put it in a watering can with some water and use on your driveway - or on cement with stains... it does remove the 'cream' and 'etches' but it burns out really fast and your cement will be shiny clean and read for an epoxy finish... I have a lot of old cement that was poorly done and out of daily sight so I tend to use that area...

additional thread cleanup is done with the appropriate die (and tap for nuts).

These are the latest I cleaned with about a 5min soak time...

I got new grade 8 bolts. The old ones were pretty bad. But thanks for the cleaning tips. I had to weld a bit and grind on the hub for the one that would spin. It came out good and got it back together. Got rear driveshaft in. Tried to go for my first drive, but hydraulic clutch not cooperating. Fork is moving about an inch, I think that is enough to disengage clutch. It doesn't seem to and I had to leave it and head back home. Now I can obsess, until next time.

    Parts of things...

I picked up a tow bar at auction for less than $40.

2" ball, feels stout. Width is about the same as frame horns on jeep, will adapt my yet-to-be-made bumper with clevis mounts in the right spots for this.

No dents in the tubing, everything works as good as I could expect.

Turned the corner on my MB JUAN TUB frame-off rebuild this week... stopped taking things apart and started putting things back together!

Trandmission and differentials in great shape but under the engine paint we found the center upper edge of the F134 block repaired by brazing... #5 head bolt will not hold. :( So that's where the coolant must have come from... 'Nothing to lose now... will try to live with it for a while. Maybe we should use gas as a coolant... 'just kidding.

PO had replaced crankshaft pulley retainer nut with home brew... wrong thread count. So I don't have to replace the harmonic balancer, juse the $10 nut!... Crank threads should clean up... we'll see.

    Anyone going to Hershey?

Took the Jeep and Aristocrat camper to Sandy Hook New Jersey. Never been to the beach before, all worked well. Loads of fun. Hope to post some pics today. Stopped at Hot Dog Johnny's on the way out.

I started on a steering column/wheel project today and knocked the universal joint apart. Turns out there are no needle bearings in this unit. Never ran across this before.....

Bad day, complex day, good day maybe...
At the same time I have to make big works in my country house, so I came from Paris on sunday afternoon to sleep there ang get the workers in the monday morning.
But : no workers. The big telescopi crane is here, but probably they have something else to do, they wait for an other worker bringing a big Caterpillar, to dig some holes...
So, I made my own work, cleaning the barn for chemical treatment of the wood before insulation. I plan to make some small flats for my family. All was correct and I did good.
But, other problem : I cannot live here because the works suppose stopping water, destroying some walls, rebuild.
But at the same time I have to pass the safety control for my Jeep, before october 5th.
The idea is to leave the Jeep to the pro shop, and the guy will pass the exam.
The subject is : brakes. Thre is one front brake to change due to a leak.
I ordered the brakes, so I had to go to the shop to bring them, we install, test, and I drive a little bit to have them well adapted.
1st problem : these are 10" drums, shoes are the same but not, not exactly. The right drum doesn't want to go in position.
Solution: suppressing 1 or 2 mm on the metal prat of the shoe; which is done and OK.
    The left drum, no problem.
Then the owner of the shop opens the hood, and there is oil on the hood :
    :lol::D:cry::poo::sick:
This is a small pipe from the low part of the engine to the oil filter which is not happy.
I cannot take back the Jeep, and the safety control is soon!
This shop is lost in the country, no parts.
 I take my Note3, google Jeepvillage, ask for the salesman which is absent but an other one aswers.
I explain : a Hurricane, the oil pipe from... to.. and he tells me : buy also the small one.
Total price 30 euros, I have an account, I pay and the parcel goes to the post office, direct to the shop tomorrow.

What is important is to be in good health! :p
Everyday we meet challenges, sometimes bad luck, sometimes not.
To have a CJ5 is a good philosophical training. You never know what trick she is preparing!

I dated a girl through college that used to live near there. She constantly talked about it. I finally went there with her after 4+ years of hearing about it. She was SO offended when I told her I liked Yocco's better.

Pulled #5 head bolt which previously felt stripped (wouldn't tighten)... It is burried down inside the intake manifold on the F134 Hurricane engine... 'Just discovered it's head size is smaller than all the other head bolts. Duh! 'Wrong socket used... bolt hole not stripped! Maybe previous coolant leak is solved with the new head gasket ...if it sealed properly despite the previously loose #5.

Nearly finished engine re-assembly today. It is all flat black for my NAVY tribute jeep. It looks very good in it's subdued, understated flat black way... Kind of like the black monolith in 2001 Space Odyssey.

Re-assembled my Dana 44 rear end last week and the Dana 27 front axle/wheels today. One hub flange bolt hole is stripped (really, this time). Will drill and tap larger hole Wednesday. Found John Deer Corn Head Grease for the front spherical felt seal and for the steering box. They fouled the order and sent me 8 tubes of grease... 8! The extra's are going with me to the October Hershey auto parts flea market. Brake pads... 'ok'! Rebuilt all the wheel brake slave cylinders. New pins and retaining clips for the brake shoes. Fresh paint everywhere. 'Just waiting for new stock wheels and military tires to arrive. Will likely start to mount sub assemblies to frame this Friday.

Thanks Alan, I needed your thoughts on bad JEEP luck. I really did. Thanks for keeping it good and helping to pull me back out of my unhappiness.

on topic: I fought with my dana 27 rebuild/Power Lock project some more.
