Today I got a wild hair and decided to not invite 3 friends over to lift my tub off the jeep, but rather do it by myself with a high lift jack and some scrap lumber. It got sketchy for a few minutes there, but ultimately successful!

This was a pivotal "step backwards" that I've been putting off for a few months mostly because I didn't want to clear out the tub of all the junk piled up in it. With the tub off, I'll have easy access to finish the brakes, exhaust, frame paint, and clutch. I'm planning to put the tub on a wooden rotisserie so I can attack the hat channels, floorboards, and underside paint. Things are going to start happening around here!

Added lightweight aluminum storage to try to consolidate stuff. 10d x 12w x38L and notched and TIG to fit lower into the well 3 inches. Its 36 lbs lighter and 18 inches lower than the rack system that was attached above the roll bar down tubes. Sits 8 inches off the deck. Just
enough room to fit the yeti, too.

Need to get rid of the shiny, shake and bake for sure, maybe dull primer coat of something.

...this will help with transporting those certain things in CA that must be inconveniently locked up during transport.

Today I had a few minutes to finish mounting my inline tube stainless brake lines along the frame. So far, I'm very impressed with them. I've only had to do minor tweaking to get them where I want them. I'm waiting on some mid-eighties honda civic rubber lines to match up to my track kick front brackets, and I'll be ready to bleed. Progress! Attach0_20240529_213032.jpg Attach0_20240529_213101.jpg

I thought I could take the axle out, pull the u-joint, grease it, put it all back together.

Maybe some of Y’all can but I’m now waiting for new joints. What a **** show I am.

I’ve put allot of money and effort into this old CJ5 the past 20 years. I’ve always postponed seat upgrades since I didn’t want to lose the original fold and tumble passenger seat for easy access to the rear. However, nobody gets into the back of my CJ, so the tumble/folding seat doesn’t have that much appeal now.

With Smittybilt’s discontinuation of their early CJ seat line, I decided to buy a new pair of seats and improve this aspect of the CJ.

Thanks to Fireball’s announcement of Smittybilt no longer carrying these 44801 seats on their site, I found some new on eBay. The price is still reasonable (~$160 shipped each)! It did take several weeks to receive them, as they were backordered.

Even though Smittybilt claims a direct fit for '55-'75 CJ5’s, I think we all know there’s NO WAY that’s possible.

I had to slot two factory floor bracket holes to get the driver’s seat to fit. I’m still custom fabricating four sheet metal backets for the passenger side. I’m sure there are other options, but this was my solution.

So far, this has been a better than anticipated upgrade for comfort. I did not install the driver’s side adjustable sliders. These seats are almost 2” thicker (higher) so I didn’t want my head to touch the top bow. I never moved the slider from the rear most position anyway, so it’s not a problem for me to sacrifice that feature (yet). The seat offers more cushion than the stock seats (at least my seats that were recovered by a PO).

The passenger seat sits higher, which also isn’t an issue since my wife is shorter than average. It still folds forward; just not as far.

I still need to profile and paint these brackets.

I bought a rust free Commando that came from the high desert in western Colorado. The downside of this is all the rubber parts look like this...I put new brake hoses on it today, and a filler neck hose.

Soo the downside is you could unthread the one hose without replacing all the hardlines and cylinders because they have become one?
