    Timgr,

I went underneath the wheel well and I found some (not all) of those mount elements for a side mounted spare. Not sure if this is something I should attempt but I'd like to try. Where would I find that box "exterior mount" that attaches the tire to the outside of the jeep?

Thanks for the additional info. I just purchased this '73 cj5 and I did put a magnet on the outside and it seems to be bondo where the tire would mount. And this area of the exterior of the jeep does not have that "raised area" that accepts the tire mount and no holes are evident on the outside. Thoughts?

Throw the spare in the back and drive and enjoy it.

Rebuild that corner of the body, consider one of the suggestions above about rear-mounts, or take sterician's advice.

Mine has about a half inch of bondo there too! That's because I ran my spare into too many trees, fence posts, sign posts etc. The fender was pretty well crunched. And that is why it I don't put the spare there anymore.
