Thanks, Phantom... we're about 7300 4cyl units apart and you're a bit younger, so that nails it... my 1969 cj5 is all authentic (sans hood and roll bar), which is exactly what I came here to learn.

    Wow. Nice forum. Thanks all!

FWIW my 3B tub is an MD Juan product from around 2001. Back then I considered it decent enough to where a person would have to know a 3B pretty well to not know it was a repro tub. I do believe they have tried very hard to improve their quality on their products since then. Personally I'd feel confident about buying a new body kit for yours. At the same time before making a decision why don't you give us some pictures to look at of the areas you consider too bad to fix.

Thanks, Glen; I'll have to figure out how to post pictures... tomorrow. Please appreciate I'm unwilling to patch with Bondo... I appreciate the possible need for some minor (and thin) filler, but I want the rust to be gone. The PO pop riveted galvanized sheets into both sides of the front floor, and galvanized sheet up to the logo on both sides, then fiberglass net and gallons of Bondo. The rear deck and its (right angle) front face have several holes and galvanized/Bondo patches, rust and thin sections. And Bondo was used front and back to hold some frame mounting bolts to the tub body. I know I can buy floor and side panels but all I'd be saving is a firewall, it's top, and the two rear fenders. I would have to build one hell of a jig to get them all back together properly. One front fender I can work with but the second ...I've tried... I don't have the skill.

The guy who runs MD Juan was active on here & some other CJ sites a few years ago- he was digging for info on how to improve their products (try a search on "Rommel" for those posts). A few members actually met with him, both in the Philippines & in the states. Hopefully what he learned has gone to improving quality & getting the little details right but I'm not aware of anyone who's tried the New & Improved products. Be warned- there may still be some of the older stuff sitting in warehouses- there's no automatic guarantee that what you buy will be the "new" model.

You asked if I had any other Navy jeep references...try searching "NAS cj5" on the G503.com forum. The other was a guy I met in the Bantam jeep fair near Pittsburgh this summer who said he saw them on a naval air station... 'still looking for his contact info.

Going to jump in here. My '69 has small turn signals, had 1 domed backup light (the other was likely removed by the PO for the rear-gas tank addition filler hose)

I have no front fender reflectors, cut-outs, etc. no hood snorkle cutout. I think there's a pile of pictures of mine in my build thread.

Well... I pulled the trigger and this thursday I bought the MD Juan "1969 CJ5 tub kit" ftom Quadratec. After all the cautious 'press' I saw on the Internet about MD Juan tubs (and about Quadratec), I have to say I thought I was probably taking quite a risk.

I borrowed a trailer, drove to their warehouse, picked up a 109 x 60 x 30 metal framed (!) wooden crate, opened it up on site, and examined for "1969" authenticity (as much as I could without fully unpacking it). I was satisfied, so I took it home.

Yesterday I fully unpacked it and examined every piece side by side vs. my originals. I don't know if it is because of my initial low expectations, ignorance, or what, but I was very, very impressed. They even included the windshield to body seal (not mentioned on the Quadratec site).

As well as I can tell before assembly, this is a near exact match to my 1969 CJ5.

    More to follow later.

I took a ton of side-by-side pictures which I'll post tomorrow (?). I didn't pay the extra $$ necessary to get a "JEEP" emboss on the two sides, so of course, that's missing. And it doesn't have the cloth top tube support wells in the top of bouh sides at the forward end of the rear fenders, and the front fender (passenger side) has a small shelf in the engine compartment which my original does not have. Oh yea... they did not include a gas tank spout cut out and its angled insert...(rats!)

But the fenders are without the side marker light indents, so MD got that right! And no JEEP or WILLYS embossed on the tailgate, so they got that right too.

It included the tool box enclosure and lid (which could not be confirmed by Quadratec in advance) plus a glove box and door (which was confirmed in advance). It also included all the removable front floor access covers which online comments suggested would be missing... not so. They will need a few holes added to match the original, but I think MD got that right, too.

The instrument panel is blank (no holes at all). Cutting a speedometer hole is going to be... err... fun... but otherwise I think "no holes" is much better than "to many" or "in the wrong place". I think MD got that right, too.

I note that unlike Quadratec, Willys-Overland offers a "fixed" MD Juan tub with "corrected" tub/frame mounting locations. After unpacking this thing, I think I can slightly modify the metal shipping frame to build a jig to capture correct frame mount hole locations on my original tub, and then check and transfer them to my MD Juan tub. I'll share the experience as I go and we'll find out together.

PS the firewall mounted angles which capture the ends of the grill support rods are missing as has been accurately reported elsewhere on line.

Reading this without pictures is torture. Ugh.
Congrats on your decision though, I'm looking forward to following your project.

Might be time to start a build thread, especially before posting all the pictures.
