So you know I'm doing this thing where I move my power steering and alternator to their 1975 and later positions, for reasons I'm having trouble remembering. It has snowballed a little (http://www.fmvmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Fitzcarraldo1.jpg).

It's going pretty well, but I didn't anticipate that there are supposed to be bosses on the block to attach the lower part of the rear power steering bracket. I think I can bolt a metal plate to the bosses I have, lower down where the alternator bracket was, so that it will have something to connect to, and extend the bolts to brace against the block.

But even just like this, with the lower part of the bracket hanging in the air a half inch from the block, the bracket is solidly connected to the intake manifold, and the front of the pump is held by two other bolts on the water pump. It seems as solid as you'd expect for any other accessory; there's no movement. I would guess the reason they have this extra bracing is for the dual pulley version, where the air pump is on top of the power steering pump, both depending on the same set of brackets. With only the power steering pump, it seems fine like it is. Maybe you could even cut off the bottom of the bracket and pretend you meant it to be like that.

You think? Anyone else try this?

    Huh. The block is different.

I vote for a plate to the existing bosses. IMO you don't need to brace against the block - just make your plate from 3/16" plate or similar.

I agree. Something is better than nothing. Even if it's just a triangulr plate up from that one boss below in your picture. You should have at least a 3-point mount for an accessory to aid vibration. It's one thing to shake it and see no movement, but one good jar from a pothole could wreak havoc. Cracks in your other mounts could develop.
