Winch Off Of M715 On M38a1?

I've got a friend I'm starting to deal with a lot with jeep parts, and I mention to him I'd like a PTO winch setup. Turns out he has a winch setup he will sell me for $500. This includes the winch, shaft, and PTO. He didn't say much about the winch and I don't have a picture of it. He did tell me the PTO was a Koenig and would fit on my Dana 18 transfercase.

My question is will the M715 winch reasonably fit on my M38A1? I don't what to have to cut the frame on the M38A1 or do irreversibel damage trying the mount the winch. And I've never dealt with one, So I'm not sure how large the winch is.

He did say if I wanted it, he does have another winch. A Koenig winch off of a CJ jeep, but he wants $400 for that winch, without the PTO and shaft.

A PTO winch is a wonderful tool. I highly recommend one.

The M715 winch is considerably larger and heavier than a jeep winch, and twice as powerful.
Even if you made it fit, it would be capable of literally ripping the jeep apart. No kidding.

Civilian CJ5 winch set-ups are perfectly matched to a Jeep's needs, IMHO, and fit very tightly in the space. They are plenty powerful for anything you will ever do with a jeep.
$400 is a little high, without the pto. Complete set-ups seem to go for $300-600 these days, less than in the past.

GI M38A1 PTO winches exist, but are probably going to be harder to find and more expensive. Pictures below not my jeep.

Don't go looking for an original A1 winch and PTO. They're many thousands of dollars.

Military jeeps ran Ramsey winches. The civilian Ramsey winches look very similar to the military ones. Take a good look at the pto shafts- the cost of u-joints adds up.

 

I'm still waiting for my brother to give me the numbers off of the Ramsey winch/ PTO on his M38. "too much grease and dirt down here" I've told him a few times the the winch might be worth more than what he paid for the entire Jeep.

 

Years back at my Vol. Fire Department, I installed an original PTO winch on our M715 brush unit. That winch was way too large to use on a CJ5. If I recall, it was rated at either 12k or 15k, and I am sure it was under-rated.
An old M37 winch would still be overkill, but would likely be a better fit.

He gets parts all the time, So I'll asking him about a smaller CJ winch. If nothing else I'll just get the PTO and shafts from him and keep looking for a winch. I've read were people say a Ramsey 50/50R is good for a CJ jeep.

 

That's what I was wondering, I'd hate to get the setup and then not even be able to use it.

 

Koenig is fine too, and easy to find.

Ramsey has two model 200's one is a 4000 rated winch the other is 8000. I have two of the 4000 models I'll take a picture of it in the am, just a FYI harder to find parts for that model. Last time I can find them put in a parts list for ramsey is in 65.

 

Thanks! And I'm not going to be using it everyday, and hopefully I can find a working one reasonable priced. Its mainly going to be for looks, but I want to be able to use it if the need arises.
