I was going to say to go back to the basics. All of my ignition switches have been labeled on the back of them, OK, almost all of them.

If so that would go back to the ballast resistor "run" circuit, possibly being interrupted by a poor key-switch. I took your post #8 to mean you had bypassed it with a hot jumper, which would eliminate the switch and ballast, but the problem remained. (?) Unless the "run" position is instead grounding out the ignition somehow?

As said, many times switch studs are marked on the back, "Bat" "Ign" etc. Or you can quickly determine them with a test light or voltmeter.

And speaking of basics, it never hurts to make certain your points are clean and adjusted.

Finally found out it was an electrical problem. All wiring diagrams are not the same even if they are supposed to be for the same thing.
Before I had all the wires put where they are supposed to go my starter bendix decided to give up.
Can anyone tell me what caused this?

Ummm, that's pretty chewed up. Off of the top of my head, It was just tired to start with. Weak spring in the Bendix drive. Dirty shaft the drive rides on, Ring gear on the flywheel is also messed up?

Well obviously it didn't give up without a fight.

Could it have been engaging with a running engine? Check your ring gear.

Could be all or any of what Uncamonkey said but the ring gear looks OK. There was loud whining sound when the motor tried to start. I had to wait a couple of seconds before I could re-engage the starter.
I have a new, made somewhere in Asia, bendix on order from Walcks. Hopefully it will not end up like this one.

Just to say, I haven't bought a starter, generator or alternator or in over 40 years. They are actually very easy to repair. You seem to be heading in the right direction. I'm an old cranky guy and I trust my work more than what comes from overseas? Rant off.

I have two wiring diagrams. One shows the wire from the coil going to the ignition switch. The other shows the wire from the coil going to the instrument cluster. Which one is right?

Sounds to me like you are not wired correctly for the "RUN" mode at the key switch. Simple test: Get a small toggle switch and connect a couple of leads to it, long enough to go between the + side of your coil and the positive post of your battery. Connect it and turn it on. This will hot up your coil. Then use the key switch to crank it over. If it starts and keeps running, then you have an issue with the key switch or wiring in the "RUN" circuit. To turn off the engine after you do this, turn the toggle switch off. This will kill power to the coil. Disconnect this test circuit and troubleshoot.

Mine looked like this when I first got the Jeep. I think it is just wear over time. You can buy this part and replace it if the rest of your starter is still good. I got mine from Mike @ Kaiser Willy. He has taken good care of me during the rebuild of my '62. Quite knowledgeable, too. These aren't hard to replace and it gives you a chance to do maintenance on your starter, as you have to take it apart anyway to replace this.
