    Not sure how old it is, but the early 4 banger GM's were not a crossflow head like in the Chevy 2. THe later ones were. I raced Jeeps with a guy that had an early one and it screamed. Lots of parts are out there, just finding them. Guys ran the crap out of them in midget sprint cars in this area;

    Yes I should be more specific...
    The EARLY POSTAL DJ used the "Chevy 153" only from 1968 to 1971.

    2X on what oldtime said. I drove one of these DJ's and it was quick. It was connected to the old 2-speed Powerglide and it would launch and keep rolling. I was surprised. I would have bought it, but the owner wanted too much money for it. The 153 was offered as a Nova engine option, but nobody wanted a 4-banger in that car, so they went with the six or eight cylinder options. From what I heard, the engine was very dependable and a workhorse, and we all know about the Powerglide. That tranny is still used today in a million applications by shadetree mechanics. My parents had a '62 Buick Special with a Powerglide mated to the all aluminum 215 c.i. V8 engine that Buick made.

    no more jeeps. hard to say, but I just sold my 86cj7, and listed my 81cj5. I will never het rid of my '70cj5. that is a mostly bone stock beauty. I was just looking for a little more pep in my step, and didn't want to go through all the work of a 4.3 swap.

    Why do you think the 151 swap would be any less work than the 4.3L swap? The only difference I would expect is the firewall clearance - I think the distributor on the 4.3L will interfere with the firewall without scooting the transmission forward a little. Not sure the 151 would be any better in this respect. My understanding is that nearly all if not all engine swaps into these Jeeps require some engine location adjustments to make everything fit.

    i suspect the 4.3L may be easier in this respect, since people on the board have done this swap and you could get a head start on engine position and such.

    I don't know a lot about the 151... I would say it's ok, but I respect Jim's opinion about such things. It was used in a lot of GM cars and light trucks over nearly two decades. The only complaint I've heard is that the distributor placement is lousy for a Jeep that might get a lot of water in the engine compartment.

    A Buick motor could be put in place to the point that no one would ever be able to tell that it wasn't stock. Still lots of rusted out Jeeps with good running gear out there. If you were a little patient, it could be done for very little money. The t-98 that you have now could cover most of the cost. I actually really like the GM 4 cylinder in short Jeeps. They adapt to anything. Can run or came with HEI ignitions. They are very easy to cool and even fit under low flatfender hoods.

    It would only be easier because i have the motor on hand, and i know its in decent shape and runs. I would have to buy a 4.3, etc

    But I see this as another case of "just because you have it-----". IMO, too much work to do any swap to just use anything that just happens to be sitting in the shop-unless it happens to be just the perfect engine for the application. The 4.3/SM465 would be my minimum choice but I would almost certainly be going with a small block V8. Makes for a much more usable vehicle if done correctly.
