'67 Cj5 Rear End Parts Confusion

I've been working on resurrecting a '67 CJ5 with V6. After getting a few incorrect parts for the rear axle, I came to discover that it has a Dana 44 rather than a Dana 27 which suppliers' catalogs seem to insist upon.

Today I need a tapered axle hub and went to find one online. So I search by Dana 44 and end up on a website that has what I need. It says it fits Jeeps from 1950 to 1971. It also has a box urging you to confirm your application. I put in my year, make, model and engine and it flashes a red box that ways it will not fit my application.

So, two questions since this isn't a cheap part:
Is my CJ5 some sort of anomaly with a Dana 44? Ps what year did they become available?
Do I buy the part I think I need or make another mistake relying upon the listing by application?

The front axle is a Dana 27. All the CJ-5s before 1976 had a Dana 44 rear axle. The tapered axle shaft ended in 1970, replaced by one-piece flanged axles.

JMO - I'd be more inclined to look for a good used flange. I looked at Walck's and they do not list one available from the aftermarket.

 

Ok, I found the tapered hub by description on the Walck's site - Rear Axle Hub CJ2A, CJ3A, CJ3B, CJ5, CJ6, M38, M38A1, Station Wagon, Sedan Delivery, FC 150

811351 is the Jeep factory PN. If you Google "Jeep 811351" you should find many sources.

The better Jeep specialty retailers know these vehicles and their listings are very likely to be correct. Listings at random sources are going to contain a lot of errors and misleading information. Please feel free to ask here before you order - there is lots of experience lurking on this site.

 

If I was consistently having problems get incorrect parts and was willing to use a good used part, I would contact someone like Daryl here on the forum. He probably has the part and definitely has the knowledge to assure the correct part is used.

 

For something like a tapered axle hub, just go with a good used part- they're common and cheap. I think I might have one (kept as a spare) but won't be using it as I'll go full floater eventually on that Dana 44. PM me or put an ad in the classifieds- there'll be somebody on the forum to help you out (as mentioned above, Daryl is a good one).

As you get further into the jeep hobby (and that would be jeep prior to 197X) one of the things you'll find out is the more often you go to the vendors, the more often you'll end up with cheap foreign parts. Parts that often don't fit or work or last. Vendors are important and we all use them, but it's buyer beware. And I'll bet that, when I do use a vendor, 80% of my purchases are NOS or the occasional take-off part The spare hub I have was $3 at a swap meet and it's the kind of part I would never consider buying from a vendor.

 

The first instances of incorrect parts occurred with the local O'Reillys. The rear wheel bearings weren't correct. Went to a NAPA with the same result.

Then I bought incorrect spider gears and a rear gasket off of RockAuto. I now use a '70 CJ5 when looking for rear axle parts there.

I have purchased a few things from Walck's (without incident and another order this morning) and looked at their website for the hub and didn't find it the way I was searching.

Looking for the hub, I did a Google search and came up with 4 Wheel Parts, here's the link: Axle Hub Assembly

This part doesn't fit your vehicle Change Vehicle. That's when I decided to post.

 

With all due respect, 4 Wheel parts does a better job on late model stuff then old Jeeps.
