is there supposed to be any kind of shield or cover that goes over the dimmer switch? If not it sure is vulnerable. I was thinking about covering it with silicone.

Nope. I see your point & I've thought about it myself but on the other hand I've never heard of it actually being a problem.

If you have a quality floorboard dimmer switch, they are pretty durable. Am not aware of an add-on protective shield. There are shiny "novelty" covers for the inboard side, don't believe you'd gain much. Ah!, bet you're thinking of the outboard side with terminals and wiring. Again, not aware of a specific protector. I've not had trouble with mine. Unless one really anticipated trouble worthy of some fix that maybe more trouble, I'd just maintain a measure of cleanliness on the bottom side.

If you look closely at a good quality switch you will see they are very well sealed on the outside. They are actually water proof unless you get water inside where the push button is.

thought about moving mine to the iside of the jeep as i have a glass body. it is exposed and mine is failing from being submerged in mud and water. it could be a cheap switch too. when i replace mine i'm making a cover for mine.

I just had to replace mine because it didn't work, which I believe to be original. The thing was left dirty for a very long time. The screws were so corroded they just powdered when I put a tool to them. The wires were brittle. I ended up having to break the connectors to get the thing off. The replacement dimmer has very nice nickel plating on the screws and tangs. It'll probably never fail in my lifetime. Sometimes, I just can't leave well enough alone. Thanks.
