Steering problem?

I'll show two pics you might be able to look at and tell me what's wrong. The first is just the steering box, but the second is where it goes up to the engine compartment. Could that rubber cracked be because the steering parts are out of line? Or maybe all of that could be causing the need for constant directional re-adjustments when you're driving down the road?

You can probably see I'm talking out of my *** here. Whats wrong, or is there anything wrong? (remember I come from driving newer cars that are point and drive, i'm not used to this thing called mechanics )
