Rochester 2G won't idle and stalls if not partially choked

    I'll try that today. Do you think it's possible the "lean" condition is due to lack of fuel and not too much air? I also grabbed all the PCV Valve stuff and I'll grab replacements today. They are cheap.

    It's surely possible, but if the carb checked out ok, that was sorta ruled out... unless those front screws aren't out enough. FWIW, mine runs like crud until they are out at least 3 turns.

    There are 2 items I am not 100% sure of regarding the carburetor. 1. That the float is set correctly, it has a brass float and I wasn't positive I was using the right reference point on the float when setting the height and drop.
    2. I am not 100% sure the mixture screws are set correctly. I always read you put them at 1.5 turns out and begin from there. I haven't every turned them out to 3 or 4 turns because I can't get it to idle.

    It won't hurt to try it with them turned out 3 1/2 turns, then turn them in till it stumbles. It's worth a shot.

    Is your timing set correctly?

    A way to see if it is running lean, or if it is something else...
    Take the air cleaner off, and hold your hand over the intake, somewhat blocking the airflow. This will essentially choke it without raising the idle at the same time. If you can get it to run smoothly with the right placement of your hand, it is too lean. If not, it's probably an ignition issue.
    The Rochester is hard to diagnose problems because of the cam that boosts the idle when you choke it. It's hard to tell if the action of choking or the higher idle is fixing the problem.

    What's the number on the carb? ie - 7041185 Located under the fuel inlet.

    Did you remove the power valve in the bottom of the carb?

    Engine timed (as asked)? You need to get a timing light, this won't be the 1st time you'll have to use it. Get a tach to know your RPM idle.

    I'm sure the timing is correct, I set it when I replaced the points with the Pertronix kit. I didn't remove the power valve in the bottom, the carb was rebuild a few years back and hasn't been run at all until now.

    I'll grab the carb number when i get home

    I'm not saying that the power valve is the issue but I did the same as you. I cleaned it and knew the PO put in a new accelerator pump before I got it. I screwed around with it for a few months. I ended up rebuilding the carb and discovered, despite my cleaning there was crud under the power valve. I rebuilt the carb, set it to spec (float, screws) and bolted it up and never looked back. It was bolt and go...Still runs amazingly.

    That's the little ball under the venturi assembly with the copper colored spring over it?

    You can use a regular screw driver (carefully) and push the spring loaded pin down then unscrew. Maybe squirt some lube down there to loosen it up.

    not to get off the subject of idle . have you checked to make sure fuel pump is working properly

    Are you sure the timing is correct? I know you said it was, but may be worth a second look. Spark plugs good, wires good? Are you getting good spark? Did you change anything before this happened, or did it come on slowly?

    I am sure it's not timing. I randomly pulled 3 of the spark plugs, they look great, wires are good too. Getting good spark, It's not that I changed anything, this hasn't been in running condition while I have owned it. I have been going through one system at a time and now I am close to getting it on the road. I guess I can honestly say that everything this Jeep is doing is new to me.

    I don't quite understand how you were able to set the timing accurately if you can't get it to idle.

    You can static time it accurately with points but he has pertronix. Guess it's possible to get it very close if they provide initial instructions.

    Update: Removed power valve, replaced gasket under it, it was all clean underneath.
    Moved the idle mixture screws to 3.5 turns out each
    replaced the PCV valve grommet and hose

    No change.

    I am willing to stipulate to zero knowns and go back to square one at this point. This is a Jeep that hasn't been running in 15 years. Where do I start? What do I need tools wise? I am excited to drive this. I know with the help here I can get it going. I have a multi-meter, vacuum gauge, timing light and a cell phone to take pics. What do you want to see first?

    How about compression? I had an engine I thought was the carb so I changed the timing to make it run "better". So I redid carb, ran a little better, but still would not idle well. Had to turn up the idle to keep it running. I finally checked the timing, and it ran a hell of a lot better.
