Hi there everyone, I am looking at purchasing a speedometer for my 1967 CJ5. The seller says that he can't get the needle to move when he hooks up a speedometer cable to the back, It simply won't turn.
That being said, he also states that he gets 20 OHMS across the gauges, so my question to you all is if the OHMS reading is correct for the gauges, or just the correct reading for the little bar that connects the gauges together. ( I am not well versed in this area as you can tell)

Sorry, I may be miss-understanding your question but the speedometer needle moving/not moving has nothing to do with the ohms readings on the fuel & temp gauges- they're completely separate systems.

The speedo needle not moving is likely caused by dried grease in the mechanism- common issue on old speedos that have been sitting.

There's not really enough info to comment on the electrical reading, try a search here on "gauges", there's been plenty of information posted in the past about how they work & how to test them.

I remember in the old days on my GTO once to test the cable, I disconnected it at the tranny and hooked it up to a drill to get it to spin and see if the gauge turned at a steady speed and for cable noise. I assume you could do that to test.

Do the odometer numbers turn? If so, Howard may be correct.

The connecting bar you refer to should have zero ohms, I believe. Be advised, in some CJ5s the speedo assembly incorporates an internal voltage regulator for the gauge display. Improper grounding during "testing" can burn it out. :( Others the regulator is external, attached to the rear.

A search of the topic in the archives here will be rewarding.

Bummer...I searched and I'm finding dead links for old, but great threads on this subject. I'll post things I find that were helpful to me when I went through all the gauges and got EVERY one of them working as intended.
