Engine code question

    Found the number on my '62. Is the number supposed to match the vin? Mine does not. The engine is stamped 4J318945. How do I decifer the number?

    I did look there. Engine info doesn't match either.

    I have been searching before posting. Engine info wasn't real clear.

    Some States back in the day used the engine number for titling purposes instead of the serial number on the firewall and chassis. I have come across this a few times. I have an original New Jersey title for one of my Willys wagons with the engine number as the id. The problem is the guy I bought it from swapped a 327 Chevy in back in the early 1970's. When I went to get a title, I found I was out of luck. The original alloy id tag is still in place in the footwell, but nothing matched.
    I was never able to tie engine numbers to vehicle id.
