Just don't let a cylinder fill up with water.
.... when you go to start it, this will happen.
Otherwise, the factory rods are fine.

As Jim mentioned above the stock rods should be fine.........just get them re-sized during the normal rebuild process. I also swap out the factory rod bolts for ARP aftermarket bolts. I would also do a leak down test on that motor....

The only rod I ever broke was in a 198 V6. It sorta' was a result of over reving it while in a fit of youthful glee.

I did that "youthful glee" thing in a '67 GTO 400 c.i.. Kinda blew up the engine, but the engine I put in it afterwards was so much better I am kinda glad that I had that moment.

It was quick transformation from a V6 to a V4 after parts of the rod removed the rear third of the camshaft and punched a hole in the side of the block. It still ran well enough to limp to the side of the highway.

Until hunting season is over and I can put the Jeep away for the winter, I won't pull the little guy down. It runs great and all is well now, but I think I'm going to freshen it up over the winter. Nothing big, I changed the cam out when I got the engine, just a stock Melling cam and new lifters, new timing chain and tensioner. I will just hopefully be able to rering it, have the piston skirts coated by Swain Tech, and some new engine bearings. Tarry, I will take your advice and get the rods resized and also magnafluxed. Thanks everyone for the great advice. I really enjoy this forum.

Hard to believe it was running at all. Most of mine just kind of settled out in the oil pan in small pieces. It weighed about 200 lb. when I pulled it.

Wow ......Swain Tech haven't heard that name in many years , you must live upstate near Rochester ?........Had the pleasure many years ago to be in there shop while visiting the East Coast. Great guys is Dan still there?.............they did allot of coating for my Race motors years back , Piston skirts , domes, even wrist pins................Small World.

On your motor, make sure you check out the oil system also while you have it apart, root out and clean all your oil gallie's , also the oil pump cavity in the front cover including the side and base clearance to the pump gears.......if it's galled and worn it will never make the kind of oil pressure you would like. I also like to put the taller V8 gears in there , you should be able to still find those kits by Melling.........pumps more volume..........clean the passages going through the block and heads also and check your rocker shafts and arms...........Good Luck!

I've used their coatings on a few engines now, and I've been very happy with the performance of their products. Their prices were very reasonable also. I'm not sure if Dan is still there, I've not used them in a few years now, but I will let you know. I live in Northeast PA, but visit friends in upstate NY. Will do on the checking of the oil pump, the cleaning and V8 gears. Good advice!
