32/36 DGEV Conversion Carburetor Kit

    I'm trying to decide on a replacement carb for the Carter YF (everything on it wiggles) on my f-head. I've read page after page on why Carter is better than Solex and Solex is better than Carter, but still can't decide. I like the idea of getting a few extra HP using the Carb below, but would love to hear if anyone has any experience with it before I shell out the rather large payment. Thanks!

    I've put Weber carbs on all sorts of engines, from Toyota 22R, to AMC 258, and MG's. They are good carbs IMO, but I haven't ever tried one on an F-head. We just put a Solex on my son's Jeep, and for ~$120 it works fine, mostly.;) $375+ shipping is a heavy bill. FWIW

    A carb shop should be able to restore your Carter to like-new condition. Likely not cheaper than the Solex at $120, but likely better. I don't have a rec on where to send your carburetor, but if you search or post the question you should get some names.

    The YF is a better carb than the Solex hands down. The Solex is generally a very good bolt on replacement for the YF. I have them on both F-heads. Like Patrick said there is a lot of $$ difference in the price, and you would probably be satisfied with the Solex. The YF can be tricky to get adjusted just right so it doesn't stumble upon acceleration.

    Member ETI engineer installed the Weber, not sure if it's the same one, and he seems satisfied initially but hasn't got it on the road yet.

    I rebuilt my Carter YF and I am happy with it. The base plate was worn out so I bought a bushing kit and reamer for it. It also had parts from a completely different carburetor in it so I had to find another YF for parts. After it was all over with I'm happy I kept the YF I think this is the best my jeep has run in decades.

    Engine sounds good! :) I like that '51 Pontiac as well. What kind of engine is in it?

    Its the original Pontiac 239 six cylinder.

    Was it made by Pontiac? Just wondering because it look a lot like the 226, made by Continental, in my wagon. The videos are cool! :)

    I put the 150 cfm Weber two-barrel downdraft in the pix above on my F-134. It wasn't exactly plug and play, but wasn't too bad to do. The price with adapter and shipping was less than $280.00 out the door. It appears to be designed for this engine. I calculated, (thanks to Timgr's input) that I needed 155 cfm, so this is perfect. It has a mechanical secondary, so it is forced open when you punch it. It doesn't have a nasty flat spot when that happens either. Seems they got the accelerator pump and progressive secondary opening working together in a good way. I have my Jeep on jackstands so I can pretend I am driving it with the wheels spinning in the air, but in all cases, I am pleased with the characteristics of this carb. I once had a 240Z with Weber side drafts on it and I liked them, too.

    If you decide to go this route, I will assist you with pix and any advice that might help you get it together. The unit fits nicely under the hood and I don't need the oil bath air filter. etc. As I recall, the carb part number was k-533 or 553,
