What's the best way to hold the front drive shaft still so I can losen the nuts on the spindle yoke? With front drive disengaged the shaft just turns. When I engage it, the jeep pulls forward as the assembly turns while I try to losen the nuts. Can I hold the drive shaft with a pipe wrench while loosening the nuts?

I assume you are talking about the pinion yoke? There should only be one nut, and the best way is to use an impact wrench. Otherwise you can use a pipe wrench as a last resort. Take care not to gouge it up with the pipe wrench, at least use some heavy rags to protect the yoke, and don't grab it where the u-joint sits.

Before using the pipe wrench trying having someone step on the brakes, that ought to work.

Ah, well that's a common sense approach. I'll get the wife to step on the brakes.......hopefully she doesn't let up!

what glenn said about the impact. it just snaps the nut loose instead of trying to muscle it off which gives you what your dealing with.

IMHO, you can't own a Jeep without owning air tools. My air impact was invaluable in rebuilding my engine and tranny. Just the front crankshaft nut alone proved that I wasn't going to get it loose without air tools.

If Air isn't an option, get an electric impact. They';re a little pricey, but cheaper than a gun and compressor. I don't have a compressor at the moment, and the 120VAC (Plug in) 1/2" impact I picked up at Lowes is a good subtitute.
