I moved my jeep into the garage last year, tranny worked fine. I have done some upgrades but nothing that includede the drive train. I went to pull it out today and I have no forward gears. Reverse works fine but no forward gears. It is like it wont go into gear?? I pulled the tower and noticed that it did have some brown looking oil in it, but all the inards look rust free. Any Ideas where to start?? I tried moving the gears back and forth and the front one is tough to move but the rear is easy???

And to think I just ordered new gears a spool and carrier for the new axles I bought yesterday for it!!!

were the tower shift forks engaged into the gear hub/grooves properly?
does the shifter shift properly with the tower removed
if the Jeeps just been sitting, can't see what would cause this

When it comes to strange things like "what happened since I touched it last" --The problem is usually simple --you just have to find it. The only thing I can think of is cold ambient temperature. Thick gear oil or water in the case. Water is unlikely though.

Nothing else should change since you last drove it.

Perhaps there is water in the bottom of the tranny. Oil floats on water. Something may have rusted below the oil/water line. Drain the oil out and see if there is any water in there. You got to change out brown oil anyhow. Filter the oil as you drain it to make sure there isn't any metal inside as well. Did you try putting the transfer case in neutral or rolling the chasis back and forth? I have has T-86's lock up on me leaving only reverse. I assumed that I had forced something and moved something out of alignment inside the gear box. Rolling it back and forth finally freed up the problem without determining what the cause was.

Good points. Since my last post I did work it back and forth. It actualy got to the point that I could shift it into 1st gear and would lock up the wheels until I would try to move. It would pull forward just a touch then grind again. Since it is hooking up I believe it is something rusted or gunked together. I am as mentioned going to drain the oil and refill the case. Then try more of the same. It has helped.

I had one stuck in gear once and we just hooked it to the tractor pulling it forward eventualy it worked again!!

I actualy remember now that I backed the jeep into the garage last year and left it in gear pretty much until last week. It is possible that it has some water in it, and it did have some condensation in the top by the shift tower.

I acuired this right in the middle of another project and have not worked on it much, I am thinkuing this problem could have been in existance before I got it..
