Hi all, I have just purchased a 1967 CJ5 universal jeep in very good condition, but the prev. owner let some things slip into disrepair. With that being said, on to my troubled parking lights.
I have good headlights, good turn signals, good brake lights, good high beams, good 4 ways, but I can't get the parking lights to come on at all. I do know that they are supposed to go off when you turn on the headlights, so I started to trouble shoot the lighting system, not being an expert in electrical systems, I started any way. I needed to replace a tail light that did not work, so I replaced them both and they work fine, and I replaced the light switch, with no change in the parking lights. I am not sure If there are fuseable links in the system or not, but I can't find any fuses. I did buy a shop manual and have read through the electrical section but no luck.
I can't be the only one that has had this problem with a jeep of this vintage, so I am asking for your help and knowledge in this matter, as It is now getting darker each morning, and with no tail lights I'm probably asking for trouble if I continue to drive the jeep.

Thanks In Advance, Vince In Wa.

    Moved to correct forum.

Have you verified, with either a meter or a test light, if there is power on the parking light circuit at the terminal strip on the driver side fender when the light switch is on?

Simple diagnostics to start with. As Howard suggests, begin to trace where you have power and where you don't. Where those two things meet you will find the source of the problem.

Work forward from the battery hot wire and headlight switch, and backward from the bulb and socket.

You do have the right bulbs? Are they "known good?" Terminals and contacts clean?

    Hi Vince,

This is tells me your bulbs and wiring to the lights are good. You may have the light switch wired wrong, with the parking lights on the wrong terminals. As mentioned earlier, check all the wiring carefully and ensure it's connected properly.

    Regards,
    Tim

Not entirely. The 'parking' lights are a different filament in the bulb (and different wire) than the 4-way/brake filament.

This is for a '69, but it should be close to the correct wiring diagram-

You say you are driving to work with no taillights, they should come on with the headlights. I know you said the taillights do work though, so I'm not understanding this. Sounds like you have more than one lighting issue maybe?

I had a wiring issue with my tail lights where they wouldn't illuminate with the headlights, but would light up when braking.

Then while playing with the wires I got them stuck lit up like I was braking before I fixed it.

    Sounds like two lighting issues.

I understood he was talking about the front parking lights, not the rear. My bad...

Tim, I was also talking about the tail lights as well, they do not come on with the headlights, but as stated none of the front parking lights or tail lights come on with the headlights.
Sorry for the confusion. I am going to start troubleshooting this weekend as I am too busy during the week, Thanks for all for the advice !

You can do a lot of troubleshooting with a simple test light. Go at it like you are starting from scratch, checking the headlight switch output connections in the different positions first to verify it is working properly. That should be a very easy light circuit to get working properly. ;)

Yup. If none of them work then the problem is near the beginning of the circuit.
