Did Dana 27's come stock with lockers in the front? I have a 71 CJ5 Ren1, with the locker option in the rear, 3.73 gears. I just opened the front differential and noticed it also has a locker. Just curious. Wish I could use that carrier with 4.88 gears, but alas, I must have the 3.92 up carrier to do that, and of yet, have not found any company that makes 4.88 "thick" gears for the D27.

Is it a powerlock or a trac-lock in front?

It is a powerlock locker. Also, when it spins both wheels if I hold the passenger side wheel and spin the drivers side wheel it jerks the passenger side wheel but does not spin it. Almost like the teeth are stripped on the axle shaft of the passenger side and it grabs for a second then slips.

Just to be anal....a PowrLok is a limited slip, and not a full "locker". Meaning, it will drive both wheels to a point, but there are clutch packs that will allow slippage if one wheel is hard against a rock, etc.

Instead of looking for the thick gear or carrier have you thought about one of the spacers, there not avalible for everything but are available for some units. You could also sell both the locking units to recoup part of the money to redo your axles, changing gears and carriers when you already have lockers is gonna be expensive no matter what.

Ok, I'm not used to the whole front axle locker theory. How strong should the limited slip be? I don't have to apply much pressure to spin the opposite wheel before it starts "jerking". Is that normal or is it supposed to give me a pretty fair amount of resistance before it starts jerking? The fluid was dark, and pretty nasty, guessing its original. No chunky pieces though. Which is a good thing.

You beat me to it Jason...but if you change your mind...I too might be interested in the power lock for the D27. I have nothing to trade though. I'd have to write a check.

And that's assuming it's for 3.73's which I'm pretty sure you said it was.

    littlepurplecj.

I just re-read your initial post and it sounds like you're wanting to swap gears.

And it sounds like you'd like to have the Power Lock up front as opposed to an open dif with a lock rite.

I bought a Power Lock once before from R&P 4Wheel Drive. Turns out it wasn't the rite series locker and I had to return it. It would only fit 4 series gear sets, and mine was a 3 series.

Paul @ R&P said that the 4 series Power Locks were pretty easy to find but the 3 series were hard to come by.

Your 3 series sounds like it needs re-building.

Maybe you could contact R&P and offer to ship them your 3 series Power Lock and buy a re-built 4 series from them.

Then R&P could re-build yours and sell it to Jason....or myself if Jason doesn't want it.
