Looking for 4140 Chromoly axle shafts for my 69 Jeep CJ5. All I can seem to find are OMIX-ADA shafts in 19 spline and all Chromoly shafts are 30 spline. Any suggestions?

Going to be tough to find anything in CrMo for 19 spline tapered shafts...There is a d44 flanged for sale for 300 bucks in MD. Direct bolt in.

I am in living Southern Maryland. Question if I go from "tapered" to flanges what does that lintel for swap out? How much will I need to replace and will my Power Lock still work?

You cannot go from tapered axle shafts to the one piece flanged shafts without converting to full float axle assembly or changing to a D44 flanged shaft housing.
If you want to retain 19 splines shafts in order to fit your 19 spline Powr Lok then your best option is to convert toward a full floating axle.
The 19 spline full floating axle shafts are usually splined on the outer ends. (See Herms website)
27 splined outers require use of a separate driving flange or else use locking hubs.
One piece flanged axle shafts with integral drive flanges (stronger design) would have to be custom made.

There is a solution to convert the old D-44 tapered axles to flanged axles using the old tapered axle D-44 housing.........be it 30 or 19 spline in Cho-Mo. This does involve having custom axles made and doing certain minor modifications to your old housing. It also uses some old parts off of the old axle assembly.........this is not some pipe dream and has been done many times before . If there is any negative to the conversion it is the smaller axle tube (less strength) diameter of the early D-44 housing vs the later 1971 Dana 44 style flanged axle housing that has larger more robust tubes. Attention also must be made to getting the pre-load space on the bearing correct at the housing end.

Some folks would consider adding stronger axles to a weaker axle housing being counter-productive and to that I would partially agree and refer that to how it would ultimately be used. Adding an axle brace is also an option.......or finding the always rare 1971 offset housing and start from there.

This is a similar conversion that is still being done to this day by Moser axles on the 76 and later Jeep AMC 20 tapered axles housing when they convert them from tapered to flanged axles, almost the same system except the bearing and seal size...........but Moser does not make any conversion for the early D-44 tapered axle so no reason in calling them..... Dutchman axles in Idaho did these 30 spline axles for me a few years back. I do not know whether they would do anymore........You could call Derek up there and ask. Foothill Offroad in California at one time was selling the kit.........I believe they are now in Arizona.....I would have to look for his phone number if you want it.

I did contact Dutchman this afternoon and I was told they can custom make 19 spline CrMo axles for my rear. Of course these will cost a bit more but they will be stronger than the originals that are in there right now and I can still use my Power Lock without any problem. I did notice you have an access hole machined into your axle flange, is there a specific purpose for that?

I figured they could........just whether or not they would.........good people. On the hole , Access for your socket wrench........Makes it easier to tighten the 4 bearing retainer bolts behind it.

So your saying Dutchman will custom build 19 spline Chromoly semi "float axle" one piece shafts ?
Uses standard tapered shaft wheel bearings and seals ?

Yes, that's what they told me this afternoon at Dutchman. In fact at first he could not find the specs for the 19 spline and said I would need to send them the axles to be duplicated so they would be no mistake. He explained the order form and turn around time and then he said he found the specs in his computer. Even so, I am still shipping my old axles so that there will not be any mistakes. I have already had a few to many to count and cannot afford anymore.
