In a complete re-wiring of a 1967 CJ5 with ballast resistor the four-part video presentation "Ballasted Ignition System" has allowed a better understanding. Trust it might be helpful to others. Clicking on the link and and if necessary select "open in a new window" should get you to Part 1 and Part 2-4 will be there as well.

Sorry. Link doesn't lead anywhere. At least not for me.

Good clear explanation on many points however I'd quibble with a few of his statements.

There are indeed "real" 6 volt coils, because 6 volt systems pre-date 12 volt systems.

Also his math works out for steady state DC circuits, but with an ignition system the average power used will be well less than he's saying, first the current is only running part of the time (dependent on your dwell angle) & the coil isn't a purely resistive load- it's inductive which means the current pulse when the points close will see an apparent resistance much higher than what you see with an ohm meter.

    Still pretty good though.

Howard, thanks for the comments! I'm not very technical and was only able to follow the basics, which allowed some understanding of a Ballasted Ignition System.
