In my rebuild and upgrade to my 69 Jeep CJ, I purchased a DUI distributor replacing the MSD ignition that was on the Jeep. (BTW, we got the distributor to seat correctly without having to grind the intake manifold. Now I have read here and there that you can use both the DUI and the MSD together without any problems. Is this true? What are the advantages and or disadvantages combining the 2. If it is in fact beneficial how does one go about hooking it up correctly?

I haven't heard that, but it could be possible. The beauty of the DUI is that it is all self contained.. The MSD as you know uses an ignition module.. I just do not see this happening.. I think some more research is in order.

As I understand it, the DUI is just an upgraded HEI distributor. If you look at the MSD site or at teh MSD product page at Summit or Jegs, there will be installation instructions for using the MSD module with the HEI distributor. It should be exactly the same.

Realize that you are throwing away part of the HEI distributor function by adding the MSD module. The MSD takes over the coil switching and the module in the HEI is either disconnected or becomes superfluous (depending on how MSD says to connect it). JMO - you aren't getting a lot of value by adding the MSD to a HEI distributor. The HEI already has an electronic module inside it (though not capacitive discharge) and the HEI coil is a high-voltage design that makes the HEI a "high energy ignition." How much spark intensity do you need? Adding the MSD to HEI is way out on the flatter part of the diminishing returns curve, I would think.

years ago I installed the msd and it made a huge difference. I then installed an hei distributor and didn't notice any difference at all. Might have been slight, but not worth it for the extra money. Pulled the hei and sold it and reinstalled the msd box. The msd gives you the hotter and stronger spark. From what I understand thats what the hei's do as well.

If you've got it give it a shot and see what happens.
