This is the first time I've ever attempted anything like this so please keep that in mind. I am installing the Pertronix kit with the flamethrower coil, new autolite 85 plugs, and Bosch plug wires. The old plugs and wires weren't in good shape so I installed the new plugs gapped at .035 and put on the new wires just to see if i could tell a difference before installing the Pertronix stuff. I didn't pay attention to which terminal the wires were connected to since they were numbered 1-6 and I have a FSM to tell me what cylinder is what. I connected 1 to 1, 2 to 2, etc. while hooking it up it didn't seem that the wires were going back to the cylinders that I disconnected them from but again I didn't really pay attention. After connecting it all I tried to start it and it wouldn't fire. Started looking at things and began wondering if perhaps the po had put the wrong distributor on it. It has never run great but I attributed that to the fact that the plugs/ wires were in bad shape and it has major exhaust leaks. Here are some photos of the distributor. Thank you for any advice.

If you removed the distributor make sure you didn't install it 180 degrees out. On your crank is your timing makes. Rotate the engine to TDC and see if the rotor is pointing to the #1 cylinder plug wire. I am pretty sure you can google this. After that check that you have your coil hot wire connected correctly. Make sure that power is leaving the coil into the distributor.

I am sure the more advanced jeepers will guide you better than I can.

Just a quick observation but it appears the window where you would adjust the point dwell is facing the rear of the engine which would put everything 180 out and really mess up the firing order. It needs to be on the front side of the distributor.

Also be sure the alignment notch in the cap is setting in the detente hole in the dist housing.

Ok, there are lots and lots of good tutorials online about how to set ignition timing. You're going to need to read them. You're also going to buy a timing light. You're going to need to pull the drivers side valve cover to ensure that the #1 cylinder is at TDC. You can see that it is by looking at the rocker arms for the intake and exhaust valves. The valves will be both closed. Your timing mark should point at about zero on your harmonic balancer. you should already have all your wires off your cap and the cap off the distributor. Where the rotor points is your #1 terminal on the cap. This is all provided that your distributor is in the correct location. If its 180 degrees out, you're going to have to pull it and re install it.

You need to read everything online about how to do this if you have never done it.

    Good luck

Thanks to everyone who replied. Looks like I have some reading to do. The last picture is actually before I took the wires off. I should have paid attention to where they went. I'll use this as a learning experience. Hopefully I'll be able to get back to it before too long. Thanks again.

Just a possible alternative - I had good success finding #1 cyl TDC on compression stroke by just removing spark plug and feeling for air pushing out of plug hole when turning engine by hand instead of pulling valve covers. This is especially easy if you know your timing marks are correct and just need to determine compression from exhaust stroke.

Be careful what you read about the odd fire V6. Even when a man is very familiar with the engine he sometimes feeds incorrect info such as 47V6 did. It is usually from typing too fast and not proof reading. 47V6 stated the #1 cylinder is on the passenger side when in fact it is front left (drivers) side. Uncorrected errors like this can cause a novice a lot of head-aches.

I'll probably just go ahead and pull the valve covers just to see what's under there. I was kind of nervous when I started because Ive never done anything like this but figured the best way to learn was to just dive in. It's by no means a daily driver so hopefully I'll be able to get back to it in a week or two. Walt, I think my wife's family is from right down the road from you in Pitts, GA. We make it down about once a year for family reunions. I like it down there. Nice and quiet. Thanks again everyone. Maybe when I get it started and the new exhaust put on I can figure out how to post a video.

Yep Pitts is about 10 miles from me. The town is measured in acres :) so guess you could call it a small town. Very slow paced area. Drop a pm next time your in the area and have a visit.

Update. Finally got a chance to work on the jeep for more than a few mins today. I Installed the distibutor with Pertronix and flamethrower coil, new cap, wires, plugs, and headers. Fired right up! I ran it for a minute until the rubber fuel lines started spraying fuel. I guess the degreaser I used on the motor degraded the lines. Next up is to replace the rubber lines, install the 2 inch skyjacker springs, shocks, shackles, tires and mufflers. Hopefully be on the road this weekend. Thanks for everyone's help!
