are you running a 6 or 12 volt system. What gauges are you using and what sender for the tank? Also pictures are always helpful.

There have been literally dozens of discussions on this- try performing a search here with the term "fuel guage" (include the quote marks)

Is this a stock wiring harness or are you useng a generic replacement?

Yes there are many info if you look for 'fuel gauge'.

The most important to know is that this JEEP :?:toetap::toetap::dead horse::dead horse:fuel gauge is stupid.

After 3 'fuel gauges' I plan to fix an independant boat fuel gauge to avoid walking in the countryside looking for a can of fuel.

i fixed mine on my 77 in 1990. it was a total PITA. I actually got a new gauge from the dealer. there were a couple different kinds and i got the wrong one. had to drop the tank and replace the sender to make it work. Gauge was pegged otherwise

At least in an early cj5 it CAN be fixed unlike my damn 48 cj2a and seems like replacement quality isn't there.

my 59 cj5 has a NOS speedometer and all nos gauges in it with a omix ada sender and it works great with no problems.

I have also the Ada Omix and yes, it works, but low quality.

The fact is that a CJ 71 is with the tank at the rear, difficult access, so you give up because you have to get the tank down to check again if not good result.
It is probably easier with a tank under the seat.

Kennewick seems a nice place, with French city names (Coeur d'alene, nez-percé) or Russian (Moscow) or ? Walla Walla! and Malheur National forest!

What kind of population do you have there (I googlemap to learn, this is my way of travelling).
