So I've been building up my jeep for about 6 months now. The previous owner put the power steering gears in and a Chevy column but no pump. I finally got the pump in and it's running well but when I go to turn it while driving it try's to lock up so we think it might be the hymn joints. Are they supposed to be aligned similarly? Mine are exact opposites. Ones tilted down the other up. I cant post pics on here because mobile doesn't let me. Sorry, and thanks for the help!

The tie rod should be parallel to the axle and if the heim joints have insufficient travel, it could lock it up. There well may be something else going on but getting both ends of the tie rod the same is a good starting point. Not sure why one would mount them opposite. Really bad way to find clearance.

Will the steering cycle if you jacked it up with stands under the axle so that the suspension is loaded? You need to get a Photobucket account and post your pictures there first............Your problem could be many different things..........sounds more like a problem with the pump , steering gear or pressure.........if the pump and gear is fine at 1500-2000 psi I doubt some mis-alignment in your heim joints would stop it from turning...........pictures would be great!

You need to also look as the joints on your steering column.

We jacked it up and the steering joint is smooth. But the drag link and upper bar above it are xtremely choppy. Which exactly what happens while driving. The hymn joints were sorta seized but we greased them and it easier but it's still happening.

Well first things first.............if it's binding up the drag link..........either change or rotate the joints or if its an issue whereby there hitting the ball because the angle is to extreme there are high angle bushings that can be installed that gives it a few more degrees.............One other note is Heim joints are not legal on the street anywhere as far as I know..........If that doesn't work then Plan B.......Get some pictures posted..........might be something else that the folks here will see.

I got it fixed. The gear box was to tight. Quarter turn looser and it steered like a dream.
