67 cj5 with F134. Replaced starter solenoid a few months ago. Ever since Now and then as I am cranking there is a horrible mashing of teeth (screech would be good description). I turn off the key and give it another try and the teeth mesh fine and the jeep starts. This was not an issue before I replaced the solenoid bot not sure there is correlation there. Ideas on why the mesh is not right every time I crank? Recommendations on how to fix the issue? Thanks.

have you checked the teeth on flywheel ring gear , could have a bad spot

The starter pinion and bendix should have the ability to slip slightly and into engagement as they mesh with the flywheel. Could the bendix clutch be jammed up? Possibly the pinion gear is roughed up?

I'd pull the starter to inspect and clean it up - before the pinion gear shatters. Only takes a few minutes to get it out.

I wonder if there is a bad connection, defective solenoid maybe?

Maybe a little crooked on there. Check the tightness of the bolts. Did you shim it?

Remove starter and inspect bendix and flywheel for broke or stretched spring or gear teeth. Slowly spin the motor by hand and check flywheel all the way around

Maybe it's time for the Toyota Landcruiser starter.

Thanks guys. I'll pull the starter off this weekend and inspect teeth on both the flywheel and starter and inspect the bendix. I'm unsure about using shims on the starter....can u advise on just where I would insert shims?

I know this Sounds silly guys but....but how to turn the motor by hand to inspect all the way round the flywheel? I'm in neutral with wheels
chocked. Turn the fan but she will slip under the belt with significant pressure applied. Do I put a wrench to the pulley to turn her?

Breaker Bar with a socket in the front hub...........or a flywheel turning tool that has a hook that just grabs the flywheel if the bottom of the flywheel is exposed.

Pull the spark plugs, the engine will spin with no problem.

But if you have bad teeth you should just be able to look in the hole & see them- due to compression 4 cylinder engines tend to stop in two very specific spots 180 degrees apart & the teeth generally wear down the same amount in both areas.

I have a 1 3/8" socket + 3/4 - 1/2 adaptor + 1/2" extension so the whole thing goes through the hole in the bumper then a 1/2 ratchet and a pipe extension so I can turn the engine while keeping my eyes on whatever I'm doing. I also take the plugs out.

Really like your set up Pierre! Went and got a 1 3/8 socket, removed the spark plugs and with a small cheater bar was able to turn her. Inspected teeth all the way around and although showing some very slight wear, none we're missing. Teeth on the piƱon gear in the starter were much more worn so next move is to replace that gear. Thanks for everyone's help!

I am experiencing the same issue with "screeshing" while turning the key. It seems to start after a few "screech incidents". Is there any detriment to continuing this or should I see about replacing starter/flywheel/ring gear/teeth on flywheel ring gear?

More than likely its the starter teeth. Pull the starter and check. Just replaced the bendix on my starter for the same reason. It kept screeching until it wouldnt screech no more. ..
