What bell housing does the amc have? I might be able to pick one up for cheap that runs but i want to put a sm420 behind it but i dont want to buy another adapter. Its going in my 48 flattie so im not worried about power but it would be nice to have fuel injection. Thanks for any help.

I didn't realize that the 151s were fuel injected. If it's the Pontiac engine (same as in Fieros and ?Cavaliers?) it has the Chevy bellhousing pattern. If you're thinking of the 150 engine, I think it's the same as the rest of the AMC engines, being a destroked 2/3 of an AMC 4.0L.

The 151 is the GM "Iron Duke" engine that was used in Sunbirds, Astres, etc. I'm wonderign if it had the standard Buick/Olds/Pontiac pattern or did it have a different AMC/Chrysler pattern?

    Whups! Here's your answer:

Didn't the first wave of S-10's originally have Iron Dukes? (RWD bell).

Otherwise, you are looking at front wheel drive bells in junkyards. Not sure if that is an issue or if there is a difference.

If your talking about the Iron Duke it's a chevy pattern. If you are talking about the AMC 2.5 I believe 85 or later its the same as 60* GM IIRC, I think.

Don't get the two engines mixed up - AFAIK the GM 151 engine never had fuel injection in a CJ, while the AMC 150 had TBI. The 150 appears to use the same sort of crank sensor as the 4.0L (242), so it could probably be moved to the harmonic balancer, like on the 258 Mopar MPI kit. IF the 150 has the same bellhousing pattern as the 4.0L and the rest of the AMC engines, then you could go this route and avoid the expensive Novak kit Steve showed above: http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/465_to_amc.htm

Don't confuse the 151 with the 150 though.

    Ok, here's the deal.

CJ-5/7/8 used the Pontiac 2.5L carbureted. That was a Chevy bolt pattern.

The 2.5 AMC used in XJs/YJs/TJs is a TOTALLY different beast. I've owned both concurrently.

AMC used the Chevy 60* V6 bellhousing with this engine.

Trust me on this. I've researched this many times.

So if you want to do this Dave Moulton has a nice SM420/465 swap writeup on the web for putting one in a 4 banger YJ using a Chevy S10 bellhousing as I recall.

What you want to do has been done, just in a different wrapper.

Oh, and I still like mine. It's a sturdy engine and the FI is great.
