What type of seats should I Buy

    I have a 80 Cj 5 and I was wondering if anyone had a suggustion on the type / brand of seats I should buy???

    Hi...welcome to the site.

    Seat choices vary greatly. Factors to weigh are your height and intended use of the backseat. I'm also not sure what was stock in '80 - did the originals have a flip-forward design?

    I like the comfort of highbacks, but they can limit rear-seat access and visibility. I'm also 6'3" so any seats that are larger than original can cause legroom issues. For us the original lowbacks work best all-around.

    YUP :D

    I agree that the lowbacks are the best thing going in these jeeps. If you are over 5'10", anything that pushes you forward could be an issue...

    I'll have to disagree. I am 6'1", and have a 75.

    I purchased te Best Top trailmax fixed back seats. I disassembled the top from the bottom, and did major metal reconstruction to be able to fit them in my Intermediate.

    I LOVE the highback!

    If being "pushed forward" is an issue, place spacers under the front 2 mounting bolts that hold the seat down. You get sort of a "Lazy boy, low rider" effect, but it is very comfortable!

    Lots of good aftermarket seats out there. You may or may not have to fab attachment points for some of them.

    Junkyard seats are a good option. A buddy of mine installed some nice LEATHER seats from a Grand Am in his '79 CJ7. Good fit, only had to fab a little bit... $75 fot the PAIR. They are very comfortable and clean up easily.
    I like a seat with good side bolsters to help keep my butt in place when offroading. Look around in junkyards, see what you can find.
    Note that some Fiero, Volvo, and others have speakers integrated into the headrest. I've been told these are excellent to hear your tunes when driving topless :D

    I installed Super Seats about 10 years ago.They are still very firm, nothing "cushy and comfortable" about them. Prior to that I had seats from a '79 Subaru. (I still use the Subaru shoulder belts) If I had to do it over today, no question I'd be getting some nice seats from a boneyard instead of buying new.

    I have a set of 2002 VW leather Golf seats in mine. Not too much side bolstering to make it hard to get in and out. The seat manually goes up, down, back, forward (as you might guess I never use this feature), .... Man, are those comfy seats -- and I got them for $150.00 out of the salvage yard.

    My avatar has my old low-backs pictured. I've gotta change that picture some day...

    Leather sounds good - very comfortable in all kinds of weather. How do they stand up to sun though? Also, leather does not suffer getting wet very well... Recall the Seinfeld episode about the leather bomber jacket and getting caught in the rain?

    Ok, you got me on the cost issue. I install the Wet Okole seat covers when its hot with bright sun outside, or when water is an issue. Otherwise, I leave the covers off and the leather works great (fall, winter and early spring).

    My buddy with the Grand Am seats always keeps his top on, although he is frequently doorless in fair weather and offroad. I imagine a good tratment with some Lexol products would keep the leather supple and water resistant. Lexol may also have a UV treatment available. I'm not certain if John has treated his seats with anything... I know they did get mud-splashed and cleaned up well.

    Check out 4wd hardware (4wd.com) or quadratec. Order some lowback or high backs. Your CJ is a later style with the pedistal mounts. aLL OF THE 4wd OR BESTOP SEATS WILL BOLT RIGHT IN. I'd go for the reclining high backs myself. I have them in My 79 CJ7 and love them. I paid about $149 ea.

    Have any of yall tried the drag racing seats made out of abs? They have nice removable covers and adjustable backs ,plus they come with the mounting rails and sliders for under $130. Im thinking about getting them for my jeep. Im just a little worried that they might fit a bit to good and make it hard gettin in and out of the jeep.

    Some people swear by them. Personally, I wasn't very pleased with anything other than the price (how does it go "You get what you pay for"?). The padded covers weren't thick enough to really keep you from taking a BEATING on the trail. And yes - they are hard to get in and out of.

    Again - just my .02. YMMV.

    I have a pair of seat from a 84 Camaro( cheap). I covered them with Wet Okole Neoprenes and they fit great. On the trail and road I feel high backs are the only way to go. I have a Corbeau over-the-shoulders Harness tha makes you feel very secure even with the top off. I built my own risers and the seats slide and tilt forward for rear access.

    I have a set of Beards in my 75. I like them, but I was unable to get them into the perfect position due to my fuelcell behind the seats. It works and I have gotten used to it but I wish I could mount them a little lower and tilt them further back. They are really high quality seats and very light. On the trail the side support helps to keep you in. The only feature I wish the had would be seat heaters. :D
