okay, well now i know what i have to do if i use the stock style bearing. but i havent ruled out the option of the sealed bearing. I dont like the idea of going down a steep grade and having oil leak out the front of my trans. regardless of the spiral cuts in the retainer, some oil would still undoubtedly leak out.
Bill, when you installed your sealed bearing, did you do as JohnyJeep suggested and pop off the seal on the trans side and leave the seal on the clutch side? That sounds like it may be a good idea. The oil stays in the trans and the bearing still gets trans oil splashed on it.
Anyone else running a sealed bearing or is Bill the only one? I'm still looking for more input before deciding what bearing to use.

No, I left both seals intact. The guy at the bearing place said it would be good for a loooooong time, even in this application.

Bringing an old thread back from the dead....
I just wanted to add that I decided to go with the sealed bearing and after a lot of research, I found a place that could get it to my door for $26. everyone else wanted over $50 for it. Just thought I'd add their link in case anyone else decides to research the topic and needs the bearing. part# 6208 2RS NR

Just spoke w/Herm about this (i bought a longer inputshaft, adapter, bearing retainer and rebuild kit from him for my t-90).

1.) Your right...the felt seal is only used on the 15/16" shaft. The seal thats in the new/longer "4-bolt" bearing retainer should be replaced. He said to take the new retainer to a knowledgeable auto parts store to match one up...Herm says is a stock chev seal....

2.) Because I was concerned about leakage, I asked Herm about the three threaded bolt holes at the front of the case, used to bolt up the old/short bearning retainer (the new/longer 4 bolt bearning retainer bolts to the adapter, which "extends" the length of the t-90. Herm said to validate that the three bolt holes are covered by the adapter, and that, if so, they won't leak.

...and thats all I got to say 'bout that...

Well the T90 only has 3 bolts that hold the bearing retainer to the case. the 4 bolt retainers were used on the T18 and the T98. See the attached link for a pic of the T18 and the T98 retainers (T18 on left, T98 on right). If you get a bearing retainer from a 6 cylinder truck T90, that will accept the 1 1/8" input shaft and bolt right up to a T90 case. Otherwise, you can use a T18/T98 4 bolt retainer, but will have to drill and tap 4 holes in the T90 case to accept it, then plug the 3 unused holes that would accept a T90 retainer. But if you have an adapter to go from 4 to 3 holes, that would work too I guess, but as you said, it will extend the length of the T90, which may or may not be a good thing depending on your application.

This Fall I rebuild a T-90C and put a long input with different cluster gear in side. I had this same question about the Input shaft.

Over and over I was told---"No seal in the Long Shaft T-90" Its does seems strange. I asked many with experience in doing engine swaps using old T-90s, who verified this situation. I talked to Mile High Jeep Rebuilder about the situation. They told me not to worry. But the old T-90 is a very old style transmission.

In the past 30 years I ran a couple of Jeeps with a long shaft T-90 and had no leaks with this no seal on the input shaft situation. I never paid it much thought until I finally rebuilt one this last Fall was over 40 years old.

I put a Buick V6 to a T-90 that I rebuild with a long input shaft this Fall-- and I overfilled the tranny and T-case with oil by mistake--- and oil dripped out the front input retainer of the tranny into to bell housing and out on the shop floor.
Did not get on the clutch though--- it drips out of a hole drilled in the end of the GM bearing retainer and down the back of the inside of Bell housing.
