Looking over a 79 Jeep, I notice the front frame rails have this extra piece of steel around the front part of the frame. Wondering if this original or if it has been modified. It a looks as if the torsion bar bracket has been welded up.

Hey Pete, thats possible. Never thought about that. The frame is in really good shape, I didn't notice any damage or rot. Thanks.

I do not believe that is stock.........or at least I have never seen one like that.........Is it on both sides? Look inside and see if there is any damage.........that is also close to the steering gear mount that does break up those frames right there in that area.........There are folks that manufacture aftermarket gear mounts that don't allow the steering gear to move around like the OEM one did.

It is identical on both sides. It looks like the steering box brackets form to it pretty well also.

If It it is strong and works it's OK...............Looks like someone did a lift on that Jeep somewhere in the past.........Long shackles and a dropped Pittman Arm. .......the extra long shackles may not be helping your steering , castor and perhaps even the pinion angle up front. You should take a look.

Here's a picture of a '76 that makes it look stockish. This sway bar is an aftermarket add-on. jeep did offer sway bars for these at some point, but I don't know the history.

BTW questions about a '79 belong in the intermediate forum. You are in the wrong year range here, and you may get more and better responses there.

I hate to say it, but you might do better with this question on the JeepForum CJ forum. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f8/ We like the respectful family-friendly environment here, but there are a lot more posters that would know about a '79 at JeepForum. This is the "early CJ-5" forum and the early CJ-5s ended in 1972. There were also intermediates that were made '72-75, but anything '76 or later is a "late model" CJ. Almost everything changes on these vehicles for the 1976 model year.

Those long shackles are terrible. Gives you some insight into the PO.
