73 CJ5 all stock. I replaced the fuel and temp gauges. Now the Speedometer works, yet the odometer doesn't. The odometer did work before. I have the FSM but wanted some insight on how to get the odometer working again before I remove the cluster. Any insight is appreciated.

    Thanks

Possibly a stripped gear in the odometer mechanism. Obviously the drive is working as far as the speedo head.
Question is, why did it happen now?

Unusual - usually the opposite is true. The odometer is just gears and a numbered dial attached to the speedometer cable. The speedo needle is more complicated, since it is basically an electric motor working against a clock spring. So I'd say, if either part moves, everything has to be ok up to the speedo head, and the trouble must be in the speedo head.

First thing I'd do is remove it and inspect it. Then I'd turn it by hand and watch the speedo and odo parts move.

Could be something goofy like the speedo cable isn't sticking into the speedo head far enough to engage the odo drive, but still engages the speedo drive? I'd check that the cable is inserted properly.

Did you do any messing with the trip digit assy when you had the speedo removed from housing?

    Thanks guys,
I have some time next week, so will take it out. I didn't intentionally mess with the trip digit assy, but maybe inadvertently. Maybe it is the cable isn't far enough in.

So I took the Speedo back out again today. Much easier the second time. If I turned the speedometer cable input by hand the odometer would turn if I held the unit upside down, but not right side up. All the springs inside looked like they were present, so I adjusted the one that holds the long slender gear so it would have more tension to help it contact the odometer gear. It seemed to work, put it back in and it is reading correctly. Just one of those things I guess when dealing with an old vehicle.
