Doesnt look like you have alot of metal left to weld to. Maybe fabing up a new section would be a better idea?

It would look ok, but with that much rust, I'd wonder how long it will hold up. I'd vote to for a new section too.

I just completed a frame repair, both frame ends at the rear shackle hangers. I cut out most of the bad metal, welded in some 1/8" stock (side and bottom) to return the frame area approximately to stock. Then I had some 3/16" plate bent in a "U", 8 inches long, with 2" inside dimension. I drilled it for mounting holes, slipped it over the reconstructed frame rail to form a box. Then welded a bead at the top of each leg of the U, to the top of the frame rail. Bolted and welded the shackle hangers to this.
Pics coming later this week, watch for them in the Introductions and Garage Pics forum. Post will have "frame repair" in the title.
So, I vote for replacing the section as well. I agree with the fishmouth or < = > ends so you don't have a vertical weld on the side of the frame. Maybe cut out the bottom and side of the frame, if the top rail is still solid, weld in new side and bottom, then fishplate over the vertical welds... or U-plate it like I did.

It won't be an easy fix, but it is do-able.

The metal around it seems very solid. I now belive it was stress cracked from my snow plow in stead off rusting, so i might just end up plating it.
