    1955 Jeep CJ5 with 9 inch drums.

I bought this Jeep a few years back and it has basically just been waiting in line until I get a chance to start working on it. I am not sure how far the restoration will go yet. This one is more just for fun, to see what I can learn about these old Jeeps and I find it really therapeutic to wrench on a vehicle that I have no deadline on yet. Any deadlines will be self imposed, so for now, its just for fun.

I am slowly beginning to work on it, it has been moved into my shop at least and I suddenly have no brakes. I looked into the master cylinder and it was bone dry.

I don't see anywhere where it leaked onto the blacktop where it has been sitting. It must have leaked somewhere.

I see this Jeep as being only a farm type vehicle, maybe pull a small utility trailer with firewood, maybe a cruise around town a few times a year. Maybe a parade or two in the future. Who knows, but it will never be a vehicle that I drive very much and certainly I won't rely on it.

Having said that, one of the things that really freaks me out is the lack of a dual master cylinder. So, I started looking online and trying to figure out what is the best way to add a dual master cylinder.

It appears there is one that just kinda bolts onto the frame with the reservoir right there, and there seems to be one that has reservoirs mounted on the firewall.

Anyone have any idea which is the way to go and why?

    Thanks in advance.

The remote reservoir style is on my wish list because it is a pita to fill otherwise and your more likely to check it if you can see it. Another advantage is adaptability to disks, slightly more clearance where I need it but overall more complex.

Lots of people (myself included0 have been down this road & posted thier experiences with the two versions you've mentioned, as well as other options. Try a search here on "dual MC" or "mastercylinder replacement".

Here's some threads discussing the remote reservoir options-

Thanks guys, I did try searching this, I just don't seem to have my search skills dialed in yet on this particular forum.

I did find it with you research terms. I guess I will probably go with the remote reservoir version.

I switched to the dual master cylinder several years ago. Got ideas and help from the book, "Jeep CJ Rebuilder's Manual" by Moses Ludel. Got the installation kit from hermtheoverdriveguy.com. A welder friend came with his truck and mounted the bracket. When you pick up the dual master cylinder get a new one not a rebuilt one. That will save lots of headaches in the long run.

Thanks for the book recommendation. I will certainly pick one of those up!
