another thing, how much wobble and wear is to much. Is there a manual that gives the dimentions or service limits for a spicer model 18.
    thanks again

Peruse this - http://www.willystech.com/wt/Model18TCase/Model18TransferCase.html The service life between rebuilds is shorter on the 18 than most other t cases, but if you get a good quality rebuild kit from somewhere like Novak - http://www.novak-adapt.com/ then you'll get a much better life span out of it. The main problem is the intermediate shaft which gear always spins, there have been a lot of intermediate shafts being sold that aren't hardened well enough and wear out pretty quick. In this case cheaper isn't better, just cheap.

How can you be sure the shafts are good and not some cheap import? Doug

Buy from Novak. Might cost a little more, but you will get all good parts. I bought mine from them and I'm glad I did.

If you can ding the shaft with a center punch and a ball-pein hammer it isn't worth using. (try this on the very, very end of the shaft!)

I got my intermediate shaft and rebuild kit from Novak, and it seems like a high-quality product. Their site has lots of info on this; I learned a quite a bit there. They also have some detailed info on how to inspect your D18, etc.
