According to all the parts sites where I am looking for brake parts, My Jeep supposed to have self adjusting brakes. It doesn't as you can see, so when I type in my year all the wrong parts show up. Anyway, Doe's this look right to you guys ? It matches the original pic's i took. Also noticed there are no primary and secondary shoes, both are same size.

This is the elusive spring that you can not purchase new anywhere on the planet. I still need 3 and also 3 adjusters.

And what is the trick to getting these hold down springs on without cussing, throwing things and getting hit in the head with them :) What a pain.

Note that your brakes could have been converted to manual adjust long ago. Back in the day, you could buy a kit for most applications that removed the self-adjusters and replaced them with manual adjusters.

The picture you show is of 11"x2" Bendix self adjusting brakes. These will not be exactly the same as your 10"x2" brakes (assuming it's the '67 225 in your pics), but they have a similar collection of parts. Do you have a copy of the TSM for your year? There should be a good picture in there that shows all the pieces. If you convert to manual adjust, the top half of the brakes does not change - you get a new star wheel adjuster, and a new bottom return spring.

Your bottom return spring in the top picture looks bad. The coils should not be open. You can test brake return springs by dropping them on a concrete floor. A good spring will make a click like a pebble. A bad spring will buzz (the coils have opened).

I dont believe it was ever converted, my father purchased the Jeep from the original owner only a few years old, We've only just done general maintenance on it. At this point should I just get the self adjusting hardware since it is available? I have the factory service manual for this year (67) and all it shows is the self adjuster setup however I have read that Jeep started converting in 66 to 67 and not all Jeeps received the self adjusting brakes.

Just did a quick search, couldn't find any hardware kits for the self adjusting brakes......this was supposed to be the easy part geez :(

The early versions of the Wagner 10" brakes were never equipped with self adjusters.
I believe the 10" Wagners with self adjusters are all post 1967 ?

The 10" Wagner self adjusters are completely different when compared to the 11) Bendix brake self adjuster.
For one thing the Wagner system does not use a cable to self adjust.
The Wagner system uses a set of rods connected to a fulcrum pivot.
Absolutely none of the 10" Wagner and the 11" Bendix drum brake parts will interchange.

Excepting the wheel cylinders it seams that the only way to acquire parts for the 10" Wagners is through other jeepers.
The 10" Wagners are often scrapped when guys upgrade to 11" Bendix.

The 10" Wagners have two distinct advantages over the 11" Bendix brakes.
Less weight and they have a double lip seal between the drum and the backing plate.
That lip seal better eliminates small rocks from entering inside the drum area.
Otherwise the 11" Bendix drum type are considered as superior.

See: pic of Wagner self adjusters over here: http://www.earlycj5.net/forums/show...alling-10-quot-Wagner-Self-Adjusting-Hardware

Edit: sorry for the upside down pic, obviously the wheel cyl. should be at the top.

Good info. I think I will stick with my original setup and try to find the parts I need

    Just a thought...
The 11" brakes pictured above give better stopping power and they're easy to install.
Oh, & parts are easy and cheap to find.

    ^That spring doesn't look right.^

Here is a pic of my '68. The adjuster spring has one long end to get past the adjuster gear w/o binding it. It also looks like it has wider coils than the summitracing ones.

I haven't been able to find on on-line yet to help you out.

    You mean this spring?

The spring coils should not be open, but I'd guess that the spring location is correct.

With manual adjusters, the spring coils typically ride against the points of the star wheel. The star wheel also has fewer and larger points, made for working with an adjusting tool rather than the lever on the self-adjuster.

Notice that you need that diamond-shaped plate between the return spring ends and the brake shoes.

[h=2][/h]Yours are self adjusting, mine are not. Take a look at the "1967 CJ5 - summer project" post in the build section, He has a photo of his brakes with the same spring

Yes, that spring. I called Summit racing where I finally found new ones. They are the same spec as mine so I ordered them. $ 4.95 for 4

There exist 2 distinctly different lower springs for the Wagner 10" brakes.
The correct lower spring depends on whether or not these brakes are equipped with automatic ajusters.

I probably have the self-adjusting kit.

Not sure about picnic. Heading up to my place in the Catskills Friday. Not sure if I will be back in time by Sunday. Every year I promise myself to go but something always comes up.

I'm going to stick with finding the manual adjusters. Thanks anyway
