I pulled my sm420 out after having a light grinding noise. The front most synchro was really beat up but all bearings were ok. On the rear of the trans I noticed that the lock collar from the novak kit and rear bearing had moved allowing the shaft to walk forward about 1/8 inch. I figure this is what caused my light grinding noise. It also was difficult going into 2nd gear at this time. What all do you folks think? Is this common with this adapter kit? The collar seemed tight. All bearings ok, not beat but not new either.

When I purchased this kit, the shop I bought it from and used to rebuild my 420 told me right away they weren't going to use the lock collar, as over the years too many had come loose.
They send the new shaft out and have a groove for a snap ring machined into the shaft, install a snap ring and no more problem. Yes I had to pay about $35 to have that done, but I trusted their knowledge and experience.
He also told me he has had numerous conversations with Eric at Novak about this...to no avail.
Seems like it would be a no brainer to have Novak just do that and eliminate that collar; his words, not mine.

I am going to get it machined for a clip. Kind of foolish not to I guess. Thanks for the info.
